The discontinued 200/1.8L is probably the sharpest. Not far behind is the 300/2.8L. the 135/2L is also right up there.

off topic - a broken glass would be the sharpest - it cuts! :p

200 1.8 or one of the 85 1.2's... all other lenses are in a lower league.

From what I am reading the new 85mm 1.2 II isn't that sharp, since it has come out, the version I lenses have gone up in price because of the demand. People are thinking it's going to be the next 200mm 1.8 lens where the replacement lens does not live up to the expactations.

Judging by the MTF charts, the 300mm/f2.8 is going to be hard to beat.
300mm MTF

But the 180mm/f3.5 macro gives it a run for the money for a smaller price tag.

I think the 28-70 f2.8L USM is supposed to be sharper than the 24-70.

300mm MTF

photodo.com has MTF charts for many discontunued Canon lenses. They rate the older non-IS 300 f4 much better than the newer IS model, but they have no rating for the 300 f2.8.

And all of these are sharper than the phenomenally sharp 100mm macro? I don't know, I'm just asking...

Fred Miranda did a comparison between these two lenses and the 24-70 came out on top from what i remember.

Of all the lenses I have used in the past, I would put my 17-40 f/4L up there with the best of them on sharpness.
