Troy, I don't know the answer to your question, but to be honest its not an issue to me. Both these settings are jpg and therefore lossy. I shoot only raw images.

I don't know either, but I also don't know why you wouldn't shoot at fine or raw. Fine will always be better quality than normal and raw will be better than both. If you're going to shoot jpg, then use fine. You didn't buy a $3000 camera body to shoot at lower quality, right?

Sorry, I misunderstood then. I don't know for sure, the file size for a Fine jpeg is 4.3mb and a normal is 2.3mb, so it seems that there would be a significant quality loss...not sure though. Try it and let us know.

theres no reason to try, i was just looking at the manual, it came to me, wondering why canon would give the optiong to drop quality in their camera.

Perhaps to give the option of just shooting for internet purposes. or a fast test case type shoot, before you start with the serious stuff, like polaroids in the old days? Just a thought.

It looks better on the spec. sheets to have loads of options, even if they might compromise image quality.

also if someone is in a tight spot memory wise, they can decrease the quality an they would get more pics on a card...

The difference between Fine and Normal is the amount of compression of the image. Fine is the least amount of compression and the best quality/ Normal compression has a failry good amount of compression and less quality.

It's the same as setting the JPEG compression in Save as in Photoshop.
