Ok this is my Submitted picture int the Self Portrait IV challenge.....

Original with an "Auto Correct"

And i just now added a Crop to this piscture.... two different ones and i just want to know if it really does make a big difference with the tighter crop or not me personaly like the extra space of darkness i think it adds to it but i can see how you can get lost in the picture.... Comments welcome... tell me what you think......

Crop #1

Crop #2

Crop #3

Edit: Added Crop # 3 edit:added Original shot

Take the 3rd crop and make it square like the 2nd crop.

Lose the hand at the bottom of the frame and keep the eyes sort of "Centered" in the top lef quadrant of the capture. It will bring the subject closer and remove elements that you don't seem to want as the central focus, based upon your title.

I agree about the tighter crop (#3) but was not sure about losing the hand - if it's not there, then I think it's not clear that the face is behind crossed legs - or at least not as clear. That potential confusion might distract a bit. It does me anyway.

You should post that as a Crop #4.

Getting rid of the old Crop #3 makes it hard for someone who hasn't seen the old one to be able to tell the difference...

I like the tightest crop. I think I understand what you mean, too, about more black to give a feeling of isolation and bleakness, but I don't think there was quite enough in the original, and a bit centered. If you were tucked more into a corner of the frame with darkness on the other two sides maybe? Dunno, but I do like the last one :)

how about something more like this? now one of these I had added canvas to but you could have done that in studio as it would be illegal in a challenge.

I like the 1st one alot!!! but i think the thumb adds to the pose?? some people didnt like it and some did...... but i like how you still made it a tight crop....and still left it off center it i think it changes the feeling a bit... addes to the alone feeling... i like....
