I am experimenting with black and white photography and was wondering if anyone has some comments to help improve these pictures.

Thanks!

I'm prolly the wrong person to be replying to this, but here goes.
They look kind of flat and boring. I'm working on black and white at the moment and doing poorly but as I understand what I am reading, true black and white conversions have from the whitest white to the blackest black and all the grays between. The contrast plays a big part by giving depth (?) and life to the image. Some pictures just never work in black and white, while others look their best that way... When I look at these they dont seem to look their best in the b/w would love to see them both in color tho, they are nice shots.

Edit ** Wanted to add that I am new myself so I could be dead wrong, and the images might just not appeal to me.

It looks like the whites on both shots are overexposed, especially so on the swan. The swan image also looks quite blurry like from camera shake. The depth of the black and white is good, except for the too white sections, but I think the shots themselves are what is letting them down. Not every image can look good as a black and white. It's not just a matter of converting and voila instant goodness. There has to be something to the image first so that removing the color adds to the image such as enhancing contrast, texture, lines, or form etc.

I agree with the above and shall also add that I very quickly learnt that it is often wrong to take an 'ok' picture and convert it to B&W thinking it will somehow work better. Yes, not all pictures lend thenselves to conversion and, imho it works best with an already high quality shot that looks good in colour (you don't hide mistooks in B&W but exaggerate them)
