Anyone have one? Are they worth it. Suggestions?

I don't have one yet but I have my eye on one...

X's-Drive II (X-Drive II possibly - the naming is inconsistent)

You can check them out on www.powerinnumbers.com.au or a few other sites. Some other models are more advanced, some include LCD screens to review images, etc... It all depends on what you want it for and how much cash you have.

Personally I want something basic with high-transfer speed to the PC for downloading. I'll probably get a 40GB version (= ~40,000 images for my current camera, but thinking ahead to a better camera) and will use it as a portable hard-drive as well.

In terms of purchasing - prices for them are steadily falling and I'm going on holiday in November so I will probably wait until early October before purchasing.

Would anyone get one of these instead of high memory card?

These things are generally most useful if you're doing a lot of travelling and won't have another device (laptop or well-equipped net cafe) with you for image transfer. It's certainly more cost effective than 40 1G CF cards.

I'm looking at the x-drive II also. I think for the money it may be the best choice. I wonder if anyone has good or bad experiences with the x-drive II they could pass on?

I'm thinking about getting a Tripper...
I read a review, but haven't checed prices or availability yet.
I just ordered a 10D and I think I'm going to get a 512MB CF card and a 256MB card. Much cheaper than buying several 1 GB items. Then, I can use the portable hard drive and swap cards alot.

Lexar Pro WA 40x CF 256 MB $99.89 (RAW mods = approx 30 shots)
Lexar Pro WA CF 40x 512 MB $184.89 (RAW mods = approx 60 shots)
Portable card reader is approx $250

That's $540 or so
Three 1 GB CF cards would be $785, with no solutions if they were filled up...
Lexar Pro WA 32x CF 1 GB $259.89

I bout a 30 gig Mindstor off E-bay a few months ago. I am very happy with it so far. It packs nicely right into my camera bag and is a ton more convenient to take around than a lap top. It takes less than a minute to download a full card and uploading via USB to the computer is rather quick considering the connection limitations. Only problem is remembering to erase the card when you put it back into the camera (I usually do this when I go to take the next shot and the lcd flashes "card full" at me...)

Unfortunately, the company that made the Mindstor is out of business, but there is still support available and a few stores that will warranty them.

Are you actually going to benefit from a 40x card?

The (x) represents about 150kB/s, but the 10D tops out at around 1.3MB/s (slower than the D60 at 1.6MB/s), so for in-camera speed you'll stop seeing benefits somewhere between 8x and 12x cards. (The 1D gets between 2 and 3 times this performance). I don't think Canon even supports the WA (write acceleration) that Lexar markets.

Assuming you have a card reader (camera to PC is painfully slow), the standard USB interface will limit you to about 1MB/s, whereas USB 2.0 and firewire can give you up to 40 times that (in reality it'll be less than 10 times).

Which bottleneck do you care about?

I use 2 x 128 MB memory sticks and one 20 GB X's-drive, bought from powerinnumbers.co.au. (they are very good).

The X-drive is the best add-on I ever bought, I use it as card-reader connected to my PC, I use it as backup for my PC harddisk and I use it to store my digital images.

At home I copy images to X-drive, and then to PC harddisk, so I already have a backup before I burn my CD's.

Travelling, I download my images each night to the X-drive. This is still a bit scary since it does use a harddisk and is vulnerable. I once dropped it two days before going on holiday and had to replace the harddisk (very easy to replace).
