I want something I can keep in my pocket and use as more of a recording tool.

Are manual controls (film and shutter speeds and aperture) a common feature on non-SLR cameras? I've been using the Canon Powershot A520 up till now but it's a bit bulky for my tastes (which is a shame cos it gave me good results).

Price wise I'm not too bothered, although I want something too expenive to take out of the house!

I've been looking for the same thing. I haven't yet purchased, but here are a few I've been looking at.

Canon Powershot SD700 IS
Canon Powershot SD550
Fuji Finexpix F30
Panasonic Lumix LX1

Manual controls don't seem to be ultra common in the super compact cameras. The Powershots I listed do not have them but the Lumix and Finepix do.

I love the Fuji finepix A340 or A345...check the images in photos on this website..the A340, I had for 3 years and took over 4000 images; then the zoom broke, but it didn't owe me anything..the A345 is what I use now..I tried the canon powershot SD550-5mp..but brought it back because it doesn't give the clarity and quality of the Fuji images..plus the camera is only about $140 or $150..and worth every penny.

Mk - cheers for that. I only looked at the bottom two as I really need the manual controls. Amazon cant seem to find the LX1, and says the F30 has a build in MP3!! I cant think of a weirder combination of technology!!

Amazon lists the Lumix here but those are through their outside vendors. B&H also lists it. Check the reviews, though. I was somewhat concerned about the graininess at higher ISOs.

Hmm... seems very pricey... also I like my high ISOs, so I think that one's a no-no!

It sounds like a very good camera, but the problem is I just want to be able to record a situation and test a few different settings for if I want to come back and shoot more.

The more I read up on the A345, the more I think it's the right one. We're going into town tomorrow (got VIP tickets o a secret Zutons gig in Liverpool!!!) so I've persuaded the man to go to Jessops. I'll have a play and decide whether I lke it, and who knows - I might have a camera by the end of the day! :D
