Alright, I know this is going to sound a bit amateur, so be it! I thought I had a pretty good grasp on what Still Life consisted of....but after looking at these entries I am not so sure anymore. I need clarification before I go on voting.

Also, I have always been quick to give props to the challenge, but I gotta tell ya guys, overall, this challenge is absolutely horrid. I have never seen so many bad shots in one challenge, and I am one them to blame, of course. Am I being unfair, or is there anybody out there thinking the same thing.

Maybe I am just getting spoiled to all the fantastic, dynamite shots that DP produces.

Briefly browsing the thumbnails, it looks like a lot of entrants did not use the traditional definition of still life.

How you interpret the challenge and subsequently how you vote is up to you. There is no right or wrong.

How lucky I am, someone sees the same. I have never given out so much 2s, 3s and 4s as this time and i have just voted about 30%. From these about 100 images only about 20 met the challenge IMO. Others were landscapes, flowers in nature, people, animals and so on. Not that all the other 80 photos were all bad, but I use to discount 3 points for DNMC. Go on voting as you feel, I do so too, but it is little fun.

Thank god! I am in complete agreement. I think many DNMC too but I didn't want to be a bi**h!

Owe thank heavens. I thought I was losing my mind. (lol) Probably, am losing my mind, but it goes beyond this challenge.

I was all worried that my shot sucked. It isn't grand by any means, but along side a few I've seen submitted, I don't feel so bad anymore. I know I won't brown with it anyway. LOL...

I thought for sure I had brought up my voting average after voting on Holy Places and Night Shots, but then Environmental Portraits brought it back to basically where it was before. I just can't vote on this one. It really would make is soar to the ground. I too am a bit disappointed. Also, in Lenscap, I'm glad I didn't enter that one. I only had two ideas, and it seems both would have been duplicated many times over :)

pffft...I thought I was scoring well because it was a half-decent photo. Now I see that its just because I'm one of a few who took the title "still life" in its conventional meaning.

Oh well, if you can't be good, just make sure you're better than someone else eh :P

I'm thinking the same thing and I usually reward out of the box interpretations but I can't reward out of the planet interpretations.

I am slowly going through the "still life" entries, but so very disappointed with the high percentage that just "do not" meet the challenge in any way.

There are a lot of entries in this challenge, and I usually only vote on 50% to 60%. This time, I just have to vote 100%, so that the few good ones, at least get the score they deserve.

I cannot believe the number of 3 and 4 that I am giving out as well, as some of the images are just so "out of touch" with the real meaning of "still life".

I am so tired, so will continue this episode tomorrow.....

Hmm.. I have a half decent photo and it meets all the classic criteria (flowers, fruit/vegetables, drink) and I'm dropping like a stone. :P

No kidding sherpet. I think I may have to quit. 2's and 3's? I hate it but most of them really stink.
05/17/2006 09:45:34 AM · #12
So what is the definition of still life then?
05/17/2006 09:54:36 AM · #13
Representation of inanimate objects, such as flowers or fruit, in painting or photography.
A painting, picture, or photograph of inanimate objects.

So In my mind ... If there is an Animate object in the image it gets the DNMC comment and a deduction

Inanimate objects, is the way I took it! But hey....like I said previously, clarification on my part is welcomed.

still life- <---by The New Lexicon Websters Dictionary of the English Language.

a painting or photograph of inanimate objects/Painting or photography of such objects, as a genre.

Inanimate- ^^by the same^^-having no organic life/not having animal life, inanimate vegetation/showing no sign of having life/lacking liveliness.

The Great minds principal works again !

I just glanced through the thumbnails and there are approximately 15 that arent inanimate objects excluding flowers, which by sacredspirit's definition doesnt include flowers but nomad's definition does. 15 out of 338 images doesnt seem like a lot in comparison.

I believe flowers, if they're in a vase, pot, whatever do meet the challenge. I think some of us are just sick of seeing them in EVERY challenge. Use some imagination and creativity folks!

But, what I really want to know, and I'm pulling this pic from Photosig because I don't want to single anyone here out is why do people put flowers into shots like this? It bugs the hell out of me. NOBODY uses a flower as a bookmark. Put in a book mark to add an aura of realism, a lamp, a clock, a candle. But, I see pictures like this and I think, "What's that stupid flower doing there?" Stupid flower

Perhaps it was left by a lover so that the partner upon waking could glance at the page/passage and find it an expression of romantic tinglings?

Don't get me going on the "over abundance" of flowers

What were your subjects in the "Yellow" and "Duotones" challenges?

That's not realistic, and the stupid flowers are distracting. Heck put the stupid thing in a bud vase in the background, but not in the book!!

In voting, so eggs are not considered inanimate? Just curious because I don't want to score eggs ( and there are several) high if they are considered not to be still life. I guess I am not seeing what all of you are. I thought a lot of the images were done pretty well. Give me examples of what in this challenge is considered inanimate. I can't vote if I don't know what I am voting for. If you don't want to post here directly, then send me some e-mails. I really want to vote properly.

Trinity, I noticed that too! I mean about the definitions. Personally, I didn't think that floral arrangements met the challenge, but I have been wrong before, and if stood corrected I would change my votes on those particular photos.

It would be nice to have one of the administrators, or Critique Club people come in and clarify. If somebody knows how to invite them please do so.

Eggs show up a lot in "traditional" still life paintings...
