Had a very wild experience this weekend - Got chased by a wild elephant. This happened at Hluhluwe Game Park in KwaZulu Natal South Africa. We were driving around looking for the big five and after driving around for two hours, we came upon a heard of elephants.
Driving closer, a young male decided that he didn't like my car and charged us.
I pulled away, stopped about 10meters away and he charged again. It is a very impressive site seeing a full grown elephant charging at full speed, ears flapping, trumpeting warnings etc.

Sounds like a good car insurance commercial :-)

Didn't feel that nice in the car - elephant was about the same size as my car - 1 on 1 fight - elephant would've won. At least I got a couple of great photos of him charging.

Elephants are such social animals. He probably just wanted to shake your trunk.

Don't know which elephants you are talking about - these ones are only social amongst themeselves. Saw a couple of weeks back an article where a massive bull scared a couple of tourists at hilltop restaurant at the same game park.
This restaurant has an outdoor section where you sit outside enjoying your meal. No fences. In the middle there is a huge wild fig tree. The place is situated at the top of a hill with a stunning view. Mr Jumbo decided he wnts some of the wild figs. Being such a huge animal, he had to charge up the hill to reach the top. resulting in a huge elephant moving at ahigh speed to reach the tree - suddenly appearing amongst the tourists enjoying their meals - JUST IMAGINE THE RESULT:-)

Rampant Rhino Gets Amorous with Car
Oddy Enough - Reuters | 2004-04-22

LONDON (Reuters) - A rampant rhinoceros gave a group of visitors a glimpse of nature in the raw at a British safari park when he tried to have sex with their car.

Sharka, a two-ton white rhino, got amorous with Dave Alsop's car when he stopped with three friends to take pictures of the animal mating with his partner Trixie at the West Midland Safari Park.

The 12-year-old rhino tried to mount the Renault Laguna from the side, denting the doors and ripping off the wing mirrors before Dave drove away with a puffing Sharka in pursuit.

"He was a big boy and obviously aroused," Alsop told the Sun newspaper on Thursday. "He sidled up against us. The next thing I know he's banging away at the car and it's rocking like hell."

A spokeswoman for the park, which says "rhinos are not particularly intelligent animals" on its Web site, said Sharka was a hit with the female rhinos and had fathered two calves in the last five years.

"He's got a bit of a reputation this lad and he was obviously at it again," she added.

Hluhluwe is well known for agressive eles... infact when we were there in 2004 they had notices at the entry gates to the park warning visitors that their eles were more agressive than "average" and not to approach them too closely. 10 metres is way closer than they very strongly advised.

We had a scary moment when we got trapped on a single track dirt road with eles behind and infront - they'd come out of the bushes to the sides. One HUGE bull elephant behind us started plodding towards us. We pulled as near to the edge of the road as we could and turned off the engine and stopped breathing. He was immense. He reached the car (a pretty tall 4x4 style model) and stopped. He lowered his huge head and looked in at us. Then we felt him thud the roof with his trunk. And then he moved on. And we started breathing again. Eventually the road ahead was clear and we made our exit.

Have been mock charged by eles in open safari vehicles many times - the ones with no sides or roofs at all - just seats screwed onto the back of an open landrover truck thing. At least now I know how to tell a mock charge from a serious one - that first time I didn't know and nearly peed my pants!!!

If aggressive elephants worry you, then you should visit the Addo Elephant park near Port Elizabeth. Their elephants are known to be very docile. So much so that you can park in the herd with them walking within three of four feet of the car. And they will only glance at you as they pass.

You should've heard the language coming from my sister-in-law. She is from Namakwa Land - People from Namakwa Land are known for their very colourful language. I almost peed myself, but not due to the ele charge - I was laughing at her comments. She was sitting directly in line with the charging ele. It also was her first time seeing a real ele.

Sounds more exciting than when I used to get chased by them for a living. Then of course all the elephants I've dealt with were tame and were supposed to be chasing me.

I think I'd freak if I was being chased by a wild elephant. Especially since when I got chased I wasn't in a car.
