Just got my confimation letter to say that I can have a new job where I will work less hours, get more holidays and more money.
New Job will be 'Marketing Data Analyst'.
Just got another 4 weeks to work where I am at the moment (notice period) and then I will be gone to pastures green.
One of the bonases is that the business park the new office is situated on is right next door to a country park and a railway museum, so I should be able to expand my portfolio a bit with new stuff.

Congrats on the new job, sounds like a step up for you.

I have a question about your notice period tho. Is it common there to give 4wks notice to your current employer? Here in the US, 2 wks is the norm with the usual converation going something like this:

Employee: "I'm leaving this stinking cesspool you call an office and going to toil in a less smelly place in two weeks"

Boss (dumbfounded): "Ummmm welll.....OK"

Employee: "I also have two weeks of vacation, so I'm just going to clear out my stuff today and be done with it."

And that's it.

In Poland it may even be 3 months (depending how many years have you been working with the current employer or what kind of position do you hold). I think it's quite common in Europe.

Two weeks is the customary minimum in the U.S., but I would feel really horrible giving any less than four in my current job. I really love these people and two weeks would totally leave them in a lurch. It's a relationship worth preserving, no bridge burning for me thanks.

And benhur, congratulations!

I agree , it was hard for me to leave my last one, I really loved some of the people there, and when I left some were upset to see me go. I felt 2 weeks was not enough.

In the UK, it's normally customery to give your notice depending on when you are paid.

i.e. If you are paid monthy, then you give one months notice, if you are paid weekly, you give one weeks notice.

Thanks for all you comments/
The job I am in at the moment I enjoy very much but there is no room for progress, most of the people I work with I get on very well with but there are a few that are a pain in the a$$e.
as regards the notice period it depends on how long you have been with the company 1 yr 1 week, 2 yrs 2 wks, 3 yr 3 wks, 4 yrs 4 wks until you get to 10 years+ is 3 months.
I know someone who has it written into their contract that they have to give 12months notice, this is so that if the company decide to cut the contract short they have to pay her a years wages.

I only have 2 days holiday accrued so far this finacial year and i need one of those so I can set up my clubs 1st exhibition on the 30th May and I will get paid for the other.

I've had jobs where I tried to be nice and give more than two weeks because I liked the folks and thought everyone was nice only to have the remaining time spent in hell because everyone is so P.O.'ed at me for leaving.

I've also had employers within a hour of my giving notice, send 2 security guards to my desk to watch me pack everything and escort me off the premises. These were also "nice" people to work with.

Once I give them notice, any relationship with an employer is basically over. I'm not going to do anything stupid, but I'm not going to kill myself to make the transition smooth either, especially if they don't have anyone available for me to sit down and go through my current projects.

I am working my last few minutes of my current job, then it is across to the pub for a few jars and onward to a new job on Monday.
