The following shot was inspired by the previous negative space challenge. I was looking at it again today and want to get some opinions. Would this meet the negative space challenge? Did I leave too much negative space around the boats?

I dont think there is too much, but if you are planning to enter this you should not talk about it in the forums before the challenge. It is meant to be anonymous.

This was taken one week after the last "Negative Space" challenge, so I cannot enter it here. I saw a couple of debates about negative space, so I figured this was a safe way to get some input without showing a challenge shot. Hope it's ok here instead of in the digital photography discussion....

Hi Nusbaum, we are neighbors of sorts. I'm from New Ulm and get down your way every once and a great while. Now I know why I like your photos....lol, your in my backyard....(:

Great shot for negative space. I would give this a 5 or 6. I don't much care for the subjects and the horizon to be right in the middle of the shot.

Nice shot. Not too much negative Space, but too centered in my opinion. Try placing the boats, centered, but lower in the frame.

Thanks for the input. I struggled with where to place both the horizon and boats in this shot. I debated is sky or water was most important, but on foggy morning like this it can be hard to tell the difference. You end up just suspended with no solid points or reference... From what I have read, I would have been better off just committing one way or the other.

Hope you don't mind, but I thought since boats are more about water, I thought this crop would be kinda cool. It crops a lot of the busier elements on the edges (though they weren't that busy).

That's a very good crop, I would say. Follows the rule of thirds nicely, and you're absolutely right about focusing the negative space on the water.

I like that crop and you are right about the water being more important.. or at least more interesting. The reflections stand out nice now and I hardly noticed them before.

This is what I meant. I have no problem with the boats in the middle, but I like the horizon down a bit. I like the boats in the middle to highlight the fact they are static, ie. peaceful day. I also did a quick burn of the sky to darken it up; did a lousy job around the edges. lol.

Just a different take.

I like Jacko's. I don't mind centered compositions - I think it's silly of us as photographers to take a 'rule' that is used to help beginners learn some semblance of composition and apply it strictly to every single shot out there.

Just trying something different...I enjoy breaking the rules too. The original is very unique and pleasing.

I like Jacko's interpretation best, but only slightly over the original posted.
I think in Jimmy's case, it just goes to show that rules are sometimes meant to be broken, as I don't find the "rule of thirds" applied to this photo to be very pleasing at all. In my opinion, the composition of the original is far more pleasing to the eye

You have to admit that Jacko's does look way better. Looks more interesting!
