Some of you might know that I participate in the annual Italian Street Painting Festival. This particular festival is the largest in the country boasting over 500+ artists. The event will happen on June 10th and 11th.
Every year for the past 10 years, I have been actively participating in the festival held in San Rafael, California on the second weekend in June. Every year, I gather a few recruits to help me out. Our group is the only one in the festival known to create works of art that revolves around architecture themes. The work has been diverse in size and style. I've outgrown the 4'x6' squares and now have moved up to the more challenging 12'x12' squares. The body of work has grown more complex and complicated over the years as well. Just a brief show of what we've done.

2002 - Park Guelle by Antonion Gaudi
2004 - Taliesin by Frank Lloyd Wright
2005 - Casa Battlo by Antonion Gaudi
The festival benefits Youth in Arts, a San Rafael based non-profit organization that provides visual and performing arts experiences and instruction in the arts to school throughout Marin County.
A tribute to a great community
This year, I am thinking of opening ideas to this wonderful community. If I can recreate an image here on DPC, what would it be? Please realize that I will be drawing this on the pavement and will be on my hands and knees the entire weekend. Color, simplicity of shapes and figures, and wow factors are key. Intricate details will be hard to recreate on rough pavement. large fields of color are key as well. I have some friends who help out by just coloring open fields of color as they think that they aren't very artistically inclined. Hehehehe. No experience required here ;)
A creative process
I usually start by laying out a grid on the pavement typically a 12"x12" grid which is reflected on the original image. I then draw the image grid by grid until I have the entire image drawn on the pavement. Then the real fun begins - coloring and filling it in.
No prizes
The event is not a competition but an opportunity to share a wonderful cause with everyone. If this were a competition, I would probably not join the event. Artists from all over the world are invited to participate with some coming from as far as Japan and Australia. Two years ago, to celebrate the 10th year of the event, they invited artists from Italy and Europe to work alongside local artists to recreate the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Spanning 5 blocks in length, they recreated Michaelangelo's masterpiece at 1/20th scale.
Here are some photos from the past couple of years. Let's just say that I get a full on tan by the time the weekend is over ;)

Please post some images that would be great to see on a 12'x12' canvas drawn entirely out of chalk. Of course, I will need the photographer's consent that I can use their image in it's likeness. Give me some inspiration and I'll draw it and send you some photos ;)

you can suggest anyone's image ;) so post away wazz! BTW, knee pads aren't all that great. they get to be too hot! |

Hi!
I have an idea for you. I just can't remeber the photographers name:) It recieved a blue ribbon. The photo was called "three in one" It had a daisy with a lady bug climbing up the stem. Both the flower and the lady bug were reflected in a water droplet on the flower.
Not sure if that was any help. I'l go looking ot see if I cant find it and give you his/her name... |

Or maybe one of your own? I think this one would look great in chalk...although it might be tough to do...

If 3D is an option you are most welcome to this photo! I'm not sure it would fill a 12X12 area without distortion though.

thanks margie ;) it doesn't have to be an architecture shot. actually i am hoping that it's not ;)
what works well are colorful images. Skip's images would be great to do specially the diver. I did try creating one in pure BW (Fritz Lang's Metropolis) but that took forever and since the pavement is already black to begin with, it was even harder ;(
neil shapiro's abstracts are nice as well ;)

Yeah but it does make for something deeper though - that you appreciate those which are close and present. The artworks are hosed down at midnight on Sunday so when commuters pass by the mnext day, it's as if nothing happened ;(
