Yep, it's true... after almost 3 years I got handed my first DQ in the Free Study XI Challenge. Reasons- making unacceptable comments to meet the challenge criteria.

I admit it. I DID IT! I read that loads of others did as well but I doubt others powered thru as fast as I did. Not proud of it or anything but of the comments I made (with the exception of the majority where I just posted the vote, I do this sometimes) were much like the ones I would have made if I wasn;t trying to 'cheat' my way into the challenge. Short & to the point.

So, this is my admission. Good lookin' DPC for catching me on my BS. But I have a question... what has happened to the image that got DQed? It isn;t in my portfolio. Will I need to upload it again to see in on the site?

It'll show up in a pink band of disgrace after the challenge is over as a constant reminder of the omnipotence of the SC.

It should be there when the challenge is over.

Was wondering if this was going to happen somewhere along the line :)

i'm lost...what do unacceptable comments have to do with disqualification?
05/02/2006 02:57:18 PM · #6
Hmmm. Even a comment that just a score number is useful, very succintly tells me your opinion!

The challenge was only open to people who had made more comments than they received. If you didn't qualify at the time of announcement, you had a chance to make up for it by the time the challenge rolled over but they had to be "quality" comments (ie. not just a number).

mk, you've gotten faster. SC was draggin' ya down girl :-)

Rooster, you are not the only one we DQed for this. We found one other to have cheated their way into the challenge as well. (using your own phrase, for lack of better phrase, not trying to be accusing)
We carefully reviewed these situations. You say that the comments you made were the same as you always make, but that just isn't the case. You have never made a habit of leaving only a number on photos. This was the reason for our decision.
Anyway, my real point is, if you (or anyone else)is aware of others that may have abused the commenting system to cheat their way into the challenge, then please PM me a list of names so that I can check them out. We are currently checking on this, but it's a lot of work, any help would be appreciated, and of course, annonymous.

For real! Now I don't have to mess around with piddly responsibilities, I can speed answer! Except I won't have as many answers. But I can make them up!

You mean you didn't make them up before??

made up answers are usually more entertaining.

1. I actually admit, wholeheartedly, that my comments were mostly unusual. I have tho, left just a number as a comment.

2. Using the word or any derivitive of cheat is fine because it is essentially what I did.

3. I wonder what meter is used to measure 'quality' comments. I think I understand the need to make sure that I or no one else does not make comments with numbers or other such type comments to meet a challenge criteria but what of those that tend to do that anyway? If I had a habit of making comments with just the vote, would I have been DQed anyway? I don't plan to do this at all but it is rather curious, no?

AND

4. As punishment to myself, I will make up the beat comments I made & renew them with less harried comments.

But some people actually marked your numbers as "helpful comments", surely they should count :-)

I mark everything helpful, numbers, comments, as a sign of appreciation that they took the time to look, even if it's a not so nice comment. ;)

Since you asked: I was in the same boat (probably a skiff) and spent hours catching up on comments. Here's a few of mine:

****

"Comment:
This is really very nicely seen, and it well deserves its high finish. I do have a couple of issues with the processing of it, but they don't take away from the quality of the essential work.

First and foremost, the frame seems way too heavy and restrictive for this image. Secondly, the burning-in of the water upper right is not very smoothly done, and it looks very artifical. If you did this by hand, you might want to know about how to do this kind of thing with gradient overlays. Feel free to PM me for an explanation of how, if you wish.

Finally, I wish there were a trace of separation between the boat and the wall/pier in the lower left. Not much, just a hint, to have that area come alive.

VERY nice work!"

****

"Comment:
So much potential here! I don't feel quite happy with it with the tonalities as they are. I want the whole thing to be hyper-real, you know? It's such a bizarre scene, baskjetball at world's end. I'd crop a smidge off the left side too to lose that tiny dark wedge on the berm. Then mostly just play with tonalities to get a richer version. Is there any cloud detail in the original, or is it overexposed?

Anyway, great scene, great capture!

R."

****

"HaHa! I have to laugh at the "wall crack wars". It is and it isn't! It's actually semi-amazing. For quite a long moment I thought "girl against wall urban joey", then I realized she's in a FIELD, there's a TREELINE facripesake, and I actually thought "DAMN, some killer murals in Toronto!", then reality (or rurreality?) set in and I realized you layered a wall shot into an outdoor portrait. It's bizarre.

Jutilda's comment about the Vee is spot on: foreground rock to knee back up crack is a pronounced Vee. Actually I'd call it a triangle: and there's even more of them:

1. The most foreground rock is a triangle
2. The two legs make a triangle
3. The upper body makes a triangle from the 2 hands up to the head
4. The two long foreground grass stalks make a vee that never completes a triangle visually.

So this whole compsition is messing with triangles, EXCEPT that the main composition is composed of three distinctly horizontal zones overlaid with a strong vertical zone (the figure). Altogether, very satisfying if a touch bizarre."

****

I don't know where they draw the line, but it's gonna be somewhere between your "8" and the above :-) My main point here is that comments like the above can be done in 2-3 minutes, and they are very constructive; or at least, I'D think it was constructive if I received one like that.

I knew what they were doing when I received my "#" vote. Any feed back is great IMO but I applaud the fairness to those who give more comments than they receive. As a matter of fact, I'm in the process of going back after my initial vote on the competition and bumping all scores up 1 point as my way of saying thanks to all who give more back to this site. (if I gave you a 10 on the first round of votes, sorry....)

My dear Rooster

May I join you My first ever dq and I've been a member since Jun. 19 2004! :(

Yeah I had a lot of comments to make up even though I had already been working on it over a number of challenges before the free study and I simply cut and pasted a short generic message to many.

BUT with many I added extra parts as the image moved me or edited the original and again lots were made only for that photo and what I thought of it.

As for quality, well I simply don't have the skills needed to make comments at the level of Bear / cc members or many other dpc members.

Thank you, SC, for taking care of this.

Rooster, I commend you for your intentions to fix what you did.
