I am planning to buy a digicam or a dSLR. I have shortlisted my options to the Panasonic Lumix LX1, Panasonic FZ30, Canon Powershot G6 and the Fujifilm Finepix E900. I cant make out which to buy from these.
Please can u all help me out?

Thanks

Make it easy on yourself, buy a Nikon.
Seriously, I would visit a camerastore, handle the cameras you have shortlisted, see how they fit into your hands, she if they handle well; feel good. I am sure you can eliminate some of them that way - even all but one.
Happy buying - good luck.

I'd recommend against the Panasonic cameras at this point, having just bought the FZ30 a few months ago I can tell you the noise can be a problem.

I've heard good things about the Powershot G6 but never used it, don't know anything about the other ones.

Or, like GuGi said buy a Nikon (or Canon 300D) I think you can get a D50 for about the price of the FZ30.

Buy a canon, why have water when you can have wine :)

No seriously a Nikon d50 would be a good choice.
I`m going to get me a nikon D50 just for infrared.

First I would say hold all of them. Play around with them. Are the controls placed well for your hands. How about the screen and view finder. I do not know much about all the cameras, so what I would recomend is Canon or Nikon. I personaly like the Canon.

I have and like the fz30 .. and will like it even more when I get around to another lens or two ... the controls on it are far better than the fz20 ..and it is lovely to use. For me weight in a camera is an issue .. and this one is light enough to be able to hold for more than 2 minutes comfortably.

I agree that playing with them for a bit is the best way ... go to a few shops and look play and get a feel for the controls ...

Good luck

i would also compare the media each camera uses. do you have any cards now? are you comfortable with teeny tiny cards that can get lost on your desk? that kind of thing. people don't think about it, but i think it's important.

Ditto

I've always tried to stay with Compact Flash myself.

I forgot to mention that i want video recording too. I want a cam that is compact and fits into my pocket and which takes good pictures and has all the necessary features for a good cam. From what i have seen i think the fz30 is huge!

Since you have narrowed your choices,
if I'm to take a pick from your list, it's going to be the Canon G6.
I liked the FZ30, almost went and buy one, until I saw the sample photos... the noise is a real problem, even at ISO100

Consider the Fujifilm S5200 as an option, it really is a great camera with the DSLR feel to it. I totally agree with Crayon on the Panasonic FZ30.

Other interesting option is Olympus SP-500UZ

we all know that BIGGER MODEL NUMBERS means better cameras! :p
So dont buy the S5200, get the bigger number S5600 instead, lol

OK seriously, since you are considering the Canon G6, which is a very good camera among your short-listed, may I recommend you take a look at the Sony DSC-V3. This camera accepts CF cards as well as conversion lens.
