How frequently do you upgrade your camera body?

1. 0-3 months
2. 4-6 months
3. 6-12 months
4. 12-24 months
5. more than 24 months

Darn I hope DPC has a "create poll" function someday!

Bought film body in 1994.
Bought digital body in 2004.

So, once every ten years. ;o)

I'll probably get a second body soon but I want a full frame with better fps than the 5D and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

It's gonna be a while this time, until a feature set really grabs me. I'd say on avg #4. 30D is primary body, 20 for second lens/backup. 10 for sale! :-) "Only" 39,000 actuations.

I got my first digital from a contest I won in 2000 - a cheap pice of garbage.

In 2001 I got my Canon powershot G1

In 2004 I got my Canon Digital Rebel (300D)

In 2006 I got my Canon 20D

I probably won't buy another upgrade for at least a year or two.

I'm on my 4th SLR, but my second (Minolta SRT-102) lasted me 30 years. DSLRs just don't do as well.

I think that's mainly because we cant change sensors on a dSLR like we change films on an SLR? I mean, there aren't really major differences between film SLRs other than the features. There is nothing to compare about quality, noise, dynamic range and all those little matters as compared to a dSLR - where those seem to change all the time with each "updated" model. No wonder the camera makers stop producing film cameras, there's not enough income! lol

Got my 300D in summer 05 and already want a 30D (but can't afford it)
Does that count ;-) I'd be upgrading if I could.

I'm on my 5th digital camera... I can't remember the timeframes for the first two (P&S) but the last three are easy to remember:

Canon 300D - March 2004
Canon 20D - March 2005
Canon 5D - April 2006

Almost exactly 1 year between upgrades.

Right now I'm still using my first digital camera, from sometime in 2001. I've had one other since then, since stolen ...

2001 = Sony P1
2002 = Fuji S602Z
2004 = Nikon D70

The D70 will only be replaced when it breaks down or perhaps in a year or four when all the new color/dr/noise/sensitivity technologies have been put in the new sensors. I will not buy a standard bayer CCD/CMOS equiped camera again. I expect a lot from Fuji in this regard and I also expect that Nikon will finally move away from Sony CCD's.

So far - I have bought a new digitial camera annually - despite trying to buy something I'd have for years...

1st - 1Mp kodak - horriblly slow but enough to get me addicted

2nd - 4Mp Casio exslim - nice camera but limited zoom and low light performance.

3rd - Nikon 5700 - the camera you buy when you want a DSLR without the pricetag, size and weight. Nice performer but found I wanted more flexability with lenses etc...

4th - Pentax SLR - Nice camera, but I got the Nikon out of a drawer the other day and it felt small.

5th - There is a new Pentax SLR coming out, rumoured to have in body antishake and 10Mp.... but I shouldn't....

Pentax SLR - 1985
Minolta SLR - 1992
Canon SLR - 2002
Canon DSLR - 2004

(Pentax was stolen but I still have the others)

I'm at about 32,000 actuations on my 300D. It will get replaced when the shutter dies as I cannot wait 4-6 weeks for my camera back. With any luck, it will be the next new Canon that comes out...

For me, it was a lot less before I got married - now I get bodies or lenses as birthday and anniversary gifts. :)

Bought an HP 945 in Sept 2002, got my 300D in April of 2005, and I am ready to get a 20D or 30D here in the next couple of months. I don't know how many features the 30D has over the 20D, and if the price increase of the 30D is worth it. I would like a Mark 1Ds II, but if I got that, the only thing I would be able to do is take a photo of my divorce papers. I can't justify that camera to my wife, but she wont have much to say if I get a 20D or 30D.

I was able to buy a Nikon D70 in 2005 after I got a gift of money. I'm very satisfied with it and besides that I don't have the money to buy a new one. If I had enough money I would probably buy a Nikon D200, but I think this won't happen the next couple of years.

It's not a fixed amount - I had my first film SLR body for 15+ years before I bought a new one that was smaller and lighter in 2001.

We bought a very cheap compact sometime around the turn of the century (doesn't that sound odd used to refer to 20->21 rather than 19->20).

I continued using the film SLR even after we'd bought our first half-way decent digital (the Minolta Dimage 7i) in 2002/2003. Sometime in this period we also picked up a cheap, fully manual Practika film SLR.

In late 2003 or early 2004 we bought our first DSLR (Nikon) and were still using that for some considerable time after we bought our second one (Canon) in 2005.

We gave the Jenoptik to a charity in India that asked for a simple compact digital. We gave the Dimage 7i to my mum. And we sold the first DSLR recently for 2/3 of what we paid for it 2 years previously.

So now we just have the Canon DSLR (and the film ones but we don't use those).

We'd really like to pick up another DSLR before our next major trip (which may be back to India in October) but it all depends on finances really...

I've had an SLR for over 10 years, but only bought my D70 18 months ago. I think the decision on when to upgrade will be made based on how far the technology has progressed (and, of course, the expense!). I'm putting my money into lenses at the moment.
