I see the photos and hear the stories about all of the other GTG's around the world, feeling a bit lonely up here in Calgary.

Has there been a GTG of Calgarians/Albertans in the past? (search was unsuccessful)
Is there any interest in such an event?
If there is any interest, where should it be held and when?

Possible destinations:
- Calgary Zoo (the cliche DPC GTG destination)
- The Rockies (Kananaskis, Canmore, Banff, etc.)
- Slopes of the Rockies (Chain Lakes, Porcupine Hills, etc.)
- Downtown Calgary
- Drumheller
- Brooks (Dinosaur Provincial Park)
- Anything else

As far as I'm concerned, I'd be willing to travel North to make it a bit more fair if any of the Edmonton DPC contingent wanted to join in as well.

When I first moved to Calgary in August/05 I noticed a thread at fredmiranda about a Calgary get together that just seemed to have some interest, but never actually happened. This is the first attempt I have seen since then, and just like before, would love to be a part of it. The problem with the last get together was that no one knew where to have it, and no one could make a decision, so it eventually fell apart. I'd love to do some night time shooting in downtown Calgary, but it can be a sketchy thing to do when you have $7000 worth of equipment hanging off your shoulder and walking around by yourself, so if anyone is interested in meeting for a night shoot downtown they can drop me a line at nephoto@gmail.com, or post to this thread. After that, depending on its success, I will start the gears to head to the mountains, other towns, etc :)

I totally agree with the downtown night shooting. Too often I've found myself on the C-Train seeing some beautiful shots. Alas I either didn't have my camera or was too chicken to brave the drunkards. A group of people would definitely make that easier.

I'm definately interested... with my super awesome Canon A85!

Seriously, sounds like an excellent idea. I am up for anywhere, but the closer it is, the easier to get to, the more likely to have a better turnout. The locations listed really depend on what type of pictures you want to take.

Another location would be the parks in Calgary, Nose Hill or Fish Creek come to mind, not sure how well those would actually work though.

The downtown at night is an appealing idea.

ok, ok. Honestly, how about it guys? Is the mighty pedro interested?

I am interested. I am from Edmonton, but often in Calgary.

Funny you should mention this now..because the topic came up over a Krombacher or ten in Germany. Pedro and I thought it would be a great idea to keep the World GTG momentum going (12 countries represented at the Europe GTG Way to go Gary, Nasti and Philos) and put on a workshop over here.. (Calgary or the nearby mountains)

I for one would be interested in a day get together as well.. but keep a larger scale event in your minds.. :)

And keep on Pedro.. lol

So Pedro suggested something in Drumheller, possibly in September.

I think that idea is great. I would rather not plan this, but that sounds like a great idea.

I might actually be off weekends in September so I would be able to attend. I am gone to Edmonton the weekend of 8-10, so preferebly not that weekend, but any other would probably work for me.

Hopefully we will get some interest from the Edmonton crowd by going to Drumheller.

I would most certainly be down for a GTG.

Would we be taking pictures, or just "hanging out"? I'd love to take some pictures with people.

I would be very interested in Calgary/British Columbia GTG (was there once, it is amazingly beautiful there), but I think for outside people like myself, a more advance notice than 1-2 months is desirable. This September is way too close, and my plans for it have already been formed :(. Perhaps next Spring? Or Summer?

Lev

Edit: I mean, you Calgarians are welcome to practice a world GTG this September, but maybe you can plan a big one for later? :)

I'd definitely be into this for sure. I'm 3 blocks from the zoo. Big deal, I know.

Lots of places/events etc coming up to shoot at. How many of us knew there was a world ski jump event last week? Good times.

A Calgary GTG should be a no-brainer. Just pick an event such as the Fringe Festival in a couple weeks, and we'll pick a place to meet. Those of us with non dSLR cameras can play security. Heheh. And take pictures of those with them getting in sh!t. Heheh.

As for a larger scale Alberta/BC GTG we could do a cool workshop weekend perhaps with one of the camera clubs in town when they bring in a special photog. Or just do our own? Zoo, Kananaskis/Banff/Jasper and Drumheller etc? Yeah, nd we'll bring Pedro in.

Who's Pedro?

I am good for most weekends in Calgary, Weekdays in Edmonton :-). Already booked for two weekends in August (I teach photography at the local zoo)

@ nephoto: Just plan it out and announce it. Give us a few weeks notice and if it's just 3 or 4 of us it's better than just one! Let it grow from there. I don't think we'll be able to meet everyone's availability, especially this time of the year.

Well, I guess I will take responsibility to plan it. I will discuss with my friend Jono (ShorterThanJesus) and we will decide on a location and a date, then we know at least 2 of us will be able to go. Most likely be either Drumheller or Dinosaur Provincial Park, unless there is some objection to it being so far out, then we might plan to do it in Calgary.

Let us know if there is any objection.

PS. To plan this, I just need to come up with a date, location, and time?

Some ideas:

Fringe festival is this coming weekend and I'll be there already. Globalfest starts friday and goes all week.

I'm sure there are other things going on as it's the last 2 weeks before school gets back in.

Anyone else with local ideas? Out of town needs planning.

ok, so I've lost motivation to put this together. I will post an invitation if I am going to do something around town.

As far as out of town goes, I'm not planning it.

I go down to Millennium Skate Park every once in a while, message me if you would like to join me sometime. Of course, I would have to borrow my friend's ( shorterthanjesus) D100, but give me a shout.
