My last 6 challenge entries have not been critiqued so am wondering if the Critique Club is still doing photos. I think that the critiques are one of the most helpful tools on DPChallenge so am missing them.

In the past 10 entries, I have received 1 critique and my photos have been in the lower half...would really like to know how to improve. Many 1's and no helpful comments.

I am always the bearer of bad news or harsh criticisms, so I should be getting used to this, but I'm not. You have double the amount of comments rec'd as made. Almost all CC members have many many more given than rec'd. If you want to prod people to comment, my thought is do more comments and maybe it will push others to do the same. Thoughts are nice, actions better.

I'm a CCer and will get to a bunch today.

I would comment more but I don't believe I should be giving anyone advice with my low points on my pictures. Before I started entering challenges on here, I always thought I was a good photographer....boy was I wrong!!! I don't know the first thing about it.....but I'm learning....and having fun in the process! :) Is there a place on here to actually LEARN how to critique a photo?

Sincerely, Christy

Yes there is, This is the place :)

Like it was said in another thread somewhere - when you comment on a picture it forces you to look longer at the image and also forces you to put into words what you like and what you dont like in an image. This in turn leads to your learning about photography. If you are worried about people misunderstanding you - paste a blanket apology in your bio - like I have ;)

I am a lousy photographer, damn it I am not a photographer, I just take pictures BUT I am sure learning faster by commenting.

Try having a ratio of giving 8 comments for every comment you recieve, as long as you are polite in telling people here what you feel is wrong/right with the picture they don't jump to bite you.

How do i sign up for the critique club, or in my case re-sign up? I think i can do a few a day if that helps. I've been noticing lately how i'm not getting as many comments as i've had a year ago, and i don't like it. Lets comment people!

If everyone did this, though, it would leave only a few commenters. I would rather you commented on my pictures than said nothing and gave it a 4. You're a voter too - what do YOU like or dislike about it?

Also - try looking at the picture photographically - lighting, composition, colors, cool-factor. See what you think...and yes, commenting more will help you become better.

Maybe if there was some sort of incentive, more people would vote.

To those of you asking and waiting for critiques. I ask that you be patient. Currently there are SO many people wanting critiques on their photos that it is extremely hard, if not impossible to get through the masses of pictures in that area. I would hope, as I think that others in the critique club would hope that there is a reason you ask for the critiques. Please don't ask for a critique on every photo! If you know what you can improve near the end of the challenge, or you got some good comments that are extremely helpful, uncheck that box. It would help us to get to others who really need the critiques to help them improve, and give us a little bit of a break. I don't think I've asked for a critique from the club in 3 challenges and I'm pretty sure I don't have it clicked for these upcoming challenges. I feel that if everyone always asks for a critique, then we are just bogged down and it takes away from those who need it and desperately want it, and also it takes away from you the same way when you don't get one when you need it. Also to those of you who don't know. Joining the critique club puts your photos first on the critique list to get critiqued, all it takes is for you to help us out and critique as well! Do not say that you are new here, and don't feel you get high enough scores to be able to critique, because anyone can be a critic truly. Just put down your likes and dislikes, you don't have to be a solid 6.0 scorer to be a good critiquer. Ok... thats all I have to say... but please THINK before you click that critique club button! Thanks!

I also feel that I have not got the expertise to be able to tell someone else what is wrong with their photo. But your right, if you want comments, give comments. However, I think that comments and critiques are two different things. Usually with comments you hear only what is good from the people who like your shot. I normally do not receive many comments from people who do not like the shot or something about the shot, leaving me still wondering why the 1's.

I sent 3 emails to try and join the critique club over the last month. Never heard a reply :(

Spiller - you've entered only 7 less challenges than me and have been here about 8 months longer. I'm on CC - you are obviously someone who's been here as long/longer than most people here...why the lack of confidence? Just tell us - you may be right or wrong. If you're right, awesome. If you're wrong, you learn too!

Lorraine (spiller), I think you underestimate yourself. You have been here over a year and have entered 30 challenges. If you say you feel unqualified to offer some comments about what is good and bad (in your opinion) about a shot, then I think DPC has utterly failed you. I knew almost nothing about photogrpahy when I first came here in april and now I've entered 17 challenges, and I am a member of the CC. I've made over 1000 comments. I've learned so much about my own photography just by trying to assess a picture. I think you should try..you'll find it very rewarding!

Setzler was the "founder" of the Critique Club and I don't know if he's been around much lately. I don't know who's adding people to the CC list right now, but I know that there was a sort of "application" process when it first started. Not everybody could just join up.

My best advice to you guys is to start leaving comments on photos in the challenges. They don't all have to be in depth, but if you love a photo say so. If you hate it, say why. The Critique Club doesn't work if each person only gets one in-depth critique on every photo. I would much rather have 10 various small comments than one in-depth critique from one point of view.

And for the record, I have nearly twice as many comments given as received -- and I don't even vote on every challenge.

Originally people submitted a sample critique for the same picture, but I think now pretty much anyone can join with a commitment to reviewing a small number of photos each week.

I'm sure things are also more difficult with three challenges/week instead of two. Maybe the CC should try only doing one of the challenges each week.

And I bet a lot of people are traveling or otherwise distracted from their ordinary duties during the (Northern) Summer season.

I see the option for getting a critique is still offered when a submision is being made, I thought it was going to be changed to be offered only after the challenge was complete. I feel that it should be something you ask for after the challenge is complete because many of a person's questions or concerns might be answered during the challenge by those people that make comments. This would reduce the burdon on the CC allowing them to help those that still want it afterwards.

I have stopped making critiques on the CC in favor of offering my opinions on those pictures that I feel need help or praise as I vote on the challenge submissions. By getting a picture randomly as with the CC I find more often than not that I get a picture that is much too difficult for my critique, which might be better for someone else to do, and I am stuck with it and can't choose to take a different one.

I hope that every one takes the time to look at the comments that they get, to see what the person was trying to tell them, because every comment is voluntary and if it is one that gives advice you need to try to learn from it. What I am trying to point out is that if 5 people say a picture looks out of focus, it is probably out of focus no matter what the photographer thought at the time they made the picture.

agreed 100%. oftentimes in my CC comments, everything I hit on has already been mentioned in the challenge comments.

again, i'd much rather have 10 short comments from various viewpoints, than 1 longer one with one point of view. maybe that's just me.

Thanks for the critique on Get that thing out of my face and comments from Sparky Mark on The Garden and Round. From these comments received I am finding out that maybe lighting is one of my problems. Gives me something to work on.
