I know that this has been brought up many mmany times but I feel I need to vent. It's been a busy last week or so but I finally got to finding out my result for Children's Toy - 4.7, for a photo that I felt deserved a helluva lot better if I do say so myself.
The thing that gets my wick is that to get this distinctly average/low(ish) rating you have to have a nuber of ones or twos. As it is, I had no ones, but quite a few twos and threes, but only four comments, only tow of which were useful! There was one 'Not bad', and one which said, of all things, 'No comments'!!! I really really don't need that.
I'm getting mighty annoyed with low-rated photos with no reasoning, people telling me with numbers that I'm not as good as I want to be, but there's no excplanation of how to improve!
There will be many people like me out there feeling the same way, and I know that this issue has been raised before and I also know there's very little to be done. My only consolation is that the two utterly useless comments were left but non-camera people who I imagine came to vote for a friend and had to vote for loads of others to make their vote count.
Anyway, that's my rant, and now I feel better. Be warned though, if you leave a useless comment on one of my pics you'll hear about it! In the kindest possible way, of course.

... and breathe...

I don't have any experience in this area as of yet as I have not submitted anything, so I am just pondering... Do you think that most people don't leave comments (constructive or otherwise) because they are worried about backlash from the photographer? This should be a helpful place for assistance with your photography but a lot of the comments I see left for photographers are not all that helpful. In fact, the majority of the comments I see only deal with "how cute" something is or how "beautiful" the model is rather than with how you could improve or what is good about the photo itself. Just wondering...

I cut and pasted this from a similar thread - where I posted:

I think what is happening is that there are SOOOOO many entries now, that after plodding through so many, you lose your artful eye. Kind of like at the perfume counter: after the first 4, they all start to smell the same. I might see an image during voting, and believe me, I try to really look at it seriously and not hurry to the next image, BUT I'll see it 2 or 3 weeks later on the "recently commented page," and see it again with a new set of eyes and appreciate it more. When there are 400 entries, it just becomes numbing to me. If an image is unbelievably outstanding or really says something to me good or bad, I will probably comment, but to make as many as would be necessary to really make a dent, I'd spend even more hours on the computer than I already do, and I SPEND ALOT OF TIME ON THE COMPUTER LOOKING AT DPC IMAGES.

I don't think this issue has ever been dropped long enough to consider it old and dragged up. Well-beaten, perhaps.
