Hey neat.. I hadn't noticed that. :)

yep, makes those open challenges a bit more fun to participate in...

I predict some "I didn't notice it was advanced editing or else I would have done better" threads later on, LOL

I'm personally a big fan of the basic challenges. I actually hope that this is a temporary test thing. Nothing wrong with either type, but it would be a shame to lose the Basic Challenges.

Me too. I like having some limits and an equalizer. Basic challenges make you think a little harder on getting it right out of the camera instead of relying on photoshop skills.

Hope they don't make this a habit because it will certainly dampen my enthusiasm to participate. :(

Why the changes now? I have to wonder if it has anything to do with all of the side challenges/tournaments/league play going on??? I certainly hope that wasn't an influencing factor. It kind of changes the "rules" and spirit of all the ongoing contests!

Can you tell I think this really stinks?!

Nothing open for the newbies and other fans of Basic to shoot for, or submit to, right now. Ugh. The 'shopper revolution is complete. There goes the neighborhood.

Well the first 'Something Old' challenge was a no-editing-at-all jobby, so maybe they just like mucking around with the rules on that one?

that was a surprise even to the SC. oh, how i wish it had been for chrome. i could have pulled of the shot i had in mind SOOOO much more easily. as it was, i ended up being lazy and not submitting it 'cause i knew it wouldn't look right in basic editing. :/

huh? Big deal...it's advanced editing, I don't see why you're so upset. So choose not to enter if you so desire. I can guarantee you that we wouldn't be lucky enough to have every challenge advanced editing, so you don't have to worry there.

I like being able to compete in basic editing challenges without having to go up against the dodge/burn guru's on this site. We already have advanced editing rule challenges. By having all challenges this week with advanced editing it makes it very difficult for those still learning post-processing skills to compete on a level playing environment.

I am new to DP and haven't entered anything yet. I have just poked around, viewed pictures and voted limitedly.

A question popped into my head the other day about non-member challenges... I was wondering if we (registered users) ever got the chance to enter advanced editing challenges. Well I have gotten my answer to that from the new challenges. My question to anyone who would be willing to assist a newbie is: how often does that happen? Is there a reason that registered users usually are given only basic editing challenges?

Its not a permanent thing, no need for anyone to get their knickers in a twist! :)

Just a single week to give registered users a taste of advanced editing!

and hopefully have them sign up to get their beautiful blue shirts ;)

Well I for one am Happy :) I spent quite some time editting my chrome entry before I realized it was Basic!! D'oh. I had to pull it and enter Candid, which is now sucking!!

I totally understand what you guys are saying. I know I can not compete with the PS Lords here, but it pushes me to learn PS better, which is my new addiction, so for me it works

But I do see the need for more straight from the cam challenges, I think it adds a dimension to the challenge. I know I shoot differently if I have an eye towards post, or not.

You have this information on high authority? According to muckpond, SC wasn't aware of this in advance - so, how do you know it's only for one week?

edit to add: knickers are relaxing a bit. ;^)

You people who value this community so much, why are you so quick to cry conspiracy and end of the "neighborhood" within minutes? If you've been here this long, I'd think you'd be willing to give the site an ounce of credit every now and then and not be expecting total shambles in one fell swoop.

Maybe because we have seen how short-sighted but popular notions have swayed things around here in the past. You know what I mean, the mob mentality so often voiced in support of not-very-well-thought-out ideas that is so common in these forums, and the internet in general for that matter.

I am not at all against giving the registered users a taste of Advanced rules challenges. But I don't like having no Basic rules challenge available. Maybe I'm not remembering this totally accurately but didn't we just recently begin having a few Thursday-start Advanced rules challenges because some people felt left out of the one that was announced on a Sunday? Wasn't it Deja Vu II in response to those who couldn't do 2-Second Exposure? So now the fans of Basic can't express their concerns?

Maybe a week with no Advanced rules challenges available would be in order, just to balance things out. Can't you just hear the howls of anguish steming from withdrawal symptoms among the `shopper crowd if they were forced to do some basic photography for a change? LOL

Well, I can't speak for the 'shopper "crowd" but nobody FORCES me to do basic-editing challenges; I do them voluntarily every week.

It seems to me to make good marketing sense to every now and then have Adavnced Editing challenges for the registered users; this can serve as a taste of what they can have if they become full members. I see no reason to assume this represents any sort of a sea change in DPC, sheesh.

Having Advanced Editing available for an Open challenge is a rare occurrence--I remember it happening once before. The reason that registered (non-paying) users are limited to Basic Editing would seem to be to provide one (of many) reasons to become a Member; one of the perks is to be able to enter Advanced Editing challenges. See this for more info on what you get as a paying Member.
