Saw this pop up on a few blogs today and immediately began to desire one for my camera.

It is basically a rifle-mount for your camera and long lense. If I can't buy one then I'll make one but I'd like to know if anyone has seen these things around for more common brands (I love my zenit-e but I'm not about to switch over to a fully different glass system just so that I can use this mount).

Any ideas.

With all the "homeland security" issues with photography, I wouldn't use something that looks like a missle launcher with Russian words on it :-)

That is exactly what I was thinking. Why carry something around that looks like a gun? Think of how many news reports you've seen of police shooting someone with a toy gun (and its justifiable). If your walking around with something that looks like this your just asking for trouble.

There is a guy around here who uses a rifle mounted camera. I've seen him on some local trails a few times but never spoken to him.

I'm not sure if I mis-read or not, but... is this just a mount to go on a rifle?

I've owned a few rifles, and I don't exactly understand the point of this if it is just a mount. I guess more stability when hand-holding the camera? Would it be very hard to just get a stock and somehow attach a tripod mount to it? It would probably be cheaper too, and you could make it look less like a firearm.

edit: Or get a monopod.. lol

Maybe I've been spoiled living up here in Calgary but I really can't think of any precedence for worrying along those lines. We don't have any semblance of the 'homeland security' movement.

Failing all else, I've got enough common sense not to walk around downtown with this thing on my shoulder. It'd be useful for wildlife, sports (small rural skating rink, they all know me), and of course paparazzi work [haha].

So my question remains, has anyone seen something like this available on its own?

That's what this is. And, if I can't find this exact model, I will take your advice and manufacture my own. I'd be hard pressed to find a use for strapping a camera like this on top of a real gun.

I've seen these appear on eBay from time to time, more for Prakticas (MTL3) than Zenits, the trigger connects via standard cable trigger (so i believe that it would work with your D100) and the lens is an M42 screw thread, adapters are available to connect M42 to Nikon F (I have 4).

So in essence, if you got one of eBay for the Praktica, converting for use with a D100 would be a fairly simple process.

Oh..and the guy on Northern Exposure used one when he went bird watching.

I don't think the guy is unsafe or anything, just never spoken to him. He always looked like disturbing him would ruin his concentration.

Bushhawk makes a shoulder mount very similar to the FotoSniper for use with various camera brands. I haven't used one myself, so cannot comment on quality, but here is the website.
