I am buying a used D70 body only. I am trying to begin the process of having a part time freelance photography business. I mostly do headshots for my friends in the theatre biz but I also have been asked to do a wedding this summer in august. I am a bit short on cash and have to build one piece at a time...so blah blah blah my question is I can only afford one lense right now what should it be?

Certainly not the final lense, but for now I would seriously consider the Nikon 18-200 VR.
It's not and f2.8 like the 70-200 VR, but its nowhere near as expensive. Reviews so far say it is a great lense througout the range, but it isn't going to serve you well for the wedding. Consider a used lense specifically for that one event or borrow one.

Don't forget about the 50mm f/1.8 - you might just be able to squeeze that in as a second lens even if you only have a one lens budget.

I'm no pro or semi-pro, but I either have that or the kit 18-70 as my "walking around" lens - just depends on which one I used last.

I just got the 50mm 1.8 for my Canon. I like it so much I am getting ready to sell the 85mm 1.8

Or, the way my challenges are going lately, sell the damn lens and buy lots-o-beer. Yep, go with the beer.

Only 1 it would be my 80-200mm 2.8 AF-S

Tamron 18-200mm or 28-300mm. Both are decent enough throughout their zoom range and will provide a wide range of focal lengths for trying out the new camera. Prices are very modest as well. Later on, some primes would make a nice complement and you will have a basis for selecting what you need due to your experience with the wide range zooms.

I'd wonder who stole the other 3. ;-)

The 18-200 you mentioned sounds like it would cover a range of shooting situations. I'd second the suggestion for the 50mm 1.8 as a cheap second lens.

Haven't shot any weddings myself, but I've heard lots of people talking about how you need a lens for low light situations. So I'd find one with the smallest f# that suits the range you're looking for. I wouldn't imagine you'd have too many issues with an f4.5....but, again, the smaller the f#, the more light gets through.

Which I've been told is helpful for weddings.

Hope that helps!

I can wait on the wedding lense, since it isn't until august I was looking for something inexpensive but decent to get acquainted to the camera with. Thanks for the input!
