Folks - show some charity, 80 votes and just one comment...
08/06/2003 01:45:12 PM · #2
I agree. I have 63 votes and no comments at all. My score is starting to lower, and that's fine, but I really learn from the comments that are left. If you don't like my picture, that's fine, but please let me know what you didn't like. I know we're all busy here but short comments are appreciated just as much as lengthy ones.

If you are in 4.5-5.5 range you will not see many comments!

67, and none. for some reason, i don't expect many comments on this one. nor have i been much inspired, thus far, to give many.

I am new here and entered the challenge. How do I see the rating so far?

I have to agree with Fayech. This challenge is difficult to comment on.

I was much above it at 6.7 now at 5.6 so obviously people are voting low... I would like to know - though I mostly presume that I know the reason ;)

I started at a 6.5 with 42 votes and 3 comments, I was so excited only being my 4th challenge. But now im at 5.5 with 72 votes and still 3 comments. 30 votes and a whole point gone. Its going to be a long week. Dont feel bad people. My garden entry did 10 times better than I thought it would. I only got 232 votes out of 353 with 8 comments. I have noticed that most are from the same people from the past challenges. I love this site as a beginner and I have learned alot in the past month. Just keep your heads up and have fun. I still think you should have to vote on all submissions for yours to count.

Just a thought... How many comments have you made this week?

Well....I can tell everyone why I personally don't leave alot of comments. I LOVE taking pictures and love looking at other peoples pictures....I just don't think I have a right to criticize one's photo, when I'm not really sure what to critique. I saw 2 photos tonight that I fell in love with....one was of a man and a baby...the other one was an ultrasound picture (from the "Future" challenge) As a mom...those hit home with me. Do I judge with my heart...or with my head? Would I judge a photo higher with things that interest me...or should I be looking beyond that?? HELP!!! :) Christy

To reiterate an often-made comment of John Setzler's, writing critiques of photos is one of the best ways to learn: if not the best. It forces you to put your impressions into words, which in turn forces you to turn those impressions into lucid and coherent thoughts. I've found much the same thing: since I started paying closer attention to what I write about others photos, my ability to take the shot I'm after has improved no end. Doesn't mean people always like them, but they are at least what I'm after :-)

As to heart or head: the only answer is 'both'.

I just commented on 30 images out of 80 (not counting mine). After a while, I have to take a break otherwise I start giving boring unuseful comments. Maybe more tomorrow.

The number of comments made and recieved is updated in real-time. The other stats seem to be updated at random times :P

Well I got 111 votes and 12 comments wich would be around 10%.

I think thats pretty good, but it seems to me the better the photo is the more comments ppl get.

Maybe it should be the other way around!
we are here to get better in what we do and I welcome all suggestions on how I can improve what I am trying to do

I complete my voting.. then start at the low scores and comment.. I think my skill level has more to offer at this end.. Much better than putting WOW on all the winners.. I've started to put fewer comments on as I get a little sick of all the people who take the opportunity to PM me and complain about my comments... I thought that's what they entered for???
08/07/2003 02:07:28 PM · #23
That's (apparently) an unfortunate side affect of commenting. (Oddly, I've left quite a few comments, and have yet to recieve any negative reaction. But others have complained about it before.) Anyway, as best you can, just ignore those and continue commenting. The vast majority will appreciate it.

And if someone gets really abusive, then report it to the admins. I'm personally not the kind to go "crying" to the authorities about every little thing, but there are some (I hope) issolated cases where people have gotten really nasty, and that's worth reporting.

Maybe people have figured out that you have a cut and paste system of commenting and they don't really want to hear it from you?

I'd rather get a decently typed out suggestion to improve my photo than "dull subject what were you trying to show us" like you put on at least 10 garden pictures, probably more (I gave up on looking through your comments made after that).

It depends on wording whether you'll get a PM. "I think you shouldn't have cropped the tip of his wing off - it makes the photo incomplete." is (imo) a much more "helpful" comment than "cut off wing. try again."

I hadn't looked at your comments before my post above, and Mav's got a point. How much effort you put into making your comments meaningful will have an effect on how they're recieved. And you do have a strong tendancy towards negatives - it doesn't hurt (though it's not a requirement) to put an occasional good point aspect of a shot as well. "The lighting is ok, but the composition is off" or something like that.

To his defense, Mavrik, I went back a couple of challenges in his comments, and the garden seems to be the only one with those cut-and-paste comments. But they were pretty obnoxious when seen in context...
