I was just wondering if reading comprehension suddenly dropped? The In the Garden challenge states "compose a photograph SOMEHOW RELATING TO THE GARDEN". No where does it say the photo HAS to be in the garden.

Except, you know, the title of the challenge. For some strange reason, I use both title and details (what few there are) when I judge.

Lets talk about voting for a minute... Either my photo is somehow getting worse of the course of the week, or people are being bias because they are receiving low scores, and are trying to compensate by voting lower. Somehow, I think this is the case. Because I started out at a pretty strong 5.2 at the beginning of the week... then it dropped to about a 5, held there for a couple of days, and in the past 24 hours, it has dropped to a 4.85!!!! PEOPLE don't let your score bias YOU! PLEASE!

When I know that I am going to be voting, often times I hold my hand over my score, so that I can't let it bias me, and I just click on the challenges button quickly. That way, I vote on how I feel about the pictures and their quality, not on what others think of MY picture.

Does anyone else see this as a trend? I just think people have a tendancy to vote lower, later in the week, esp. if their photo isn't doing well.

I hear what you're saying, medic391, about the reading comprehension thing. I was coming here to vent about something similar.

I've been a bit disappointed in some of the comments I've received, because I think people need to stop taking the word "garden" so literally and think outside the box. I mean, some people call a "garden" what others call a "backyard." A garden is not just a patch of upturned earth on which a person grows flowers/fruits/vegetables. More things live in the garden than just flowers/fruits/vegetables, and more things go on in a garden than pretty scenery. Insects and other fauna can inhabit gardens in large numbers, people play, eat, and nap in their gardens...it isn't just about plowing up some earth and planting some green things.

Before people type their condescending remarks about "I don't think THIS would be in a garden," I wish they'd stop and think for a moment about the photograph and its subject and how, yes, it DOES relate to a garden, just maybe not as directly as plants and gnomes do.

Ok I feel better now.

Actually, my score's stayed pretty much steady since the second day. And I find the low votes -- when I'm vote tracking -- tend to be the earlier ones. So, no.

I won't get into the "people's votes are affected by their score" debate because it was just done (and is probably still going on) in another thread.

Before people start saying "I wish people would stop and think before they say my picture is off-topic", I wish they'd stop and think about the fact that maybe they HAVE and they just DISAGREE WITH YOU. Every time I get something back from a comment I left that argues with me or tells me I'm wrong, I'm less inclined to comment. This round, I've left hardly any comments.

I mean, it frustrates me to see people give me 1s, but I just want to know what they're thinking. I already know I disagree with them, because I wouldn't enter a photo I thought was below average. At least if someone told me I was off-topic, even if I boggled at the concept, I would understand what they were thinking.

It's always the same. Either you take your shot with the strictest voter in mind or you do what you want and live with the consequences. It's up to the photographer. I think we all know what the majority of voters think of as "garden". It doesn't really matter that the topic description gives you some leeway. If you really care about it then you might want to make your picture fit the most widely accepted version of the title and assume that lots of people don't even read the description. You aren't going to have any luck changing the voters.

I don't really care if people disagree with me. But I guess I'm just disappointed because when they comment, all they say is "I don't see how this fits the topic." End of discussion. Tell me why you don't think it fits. My photo in this challenge is one of the many that is a picture of an insect, and I'm being told it doesn't fit the challenge. To me, that just shows they haven't stopped and really thought about the photo.

I guess what I'm saying is, think before you vote, try to think about the many different angles the photographer may have taken, and if you're going to comment, then say more than "I don't like it" or "It doesn't fit the challenge." I also don't think that posting this here is going to change anything. But since the forum is titled "Rant," I felt this would be a good place to come let off steam. This is the first challenge that has really disappointed me in terms of (what I feel is) people not taking time to think about the photo that's in front of them.

Well, now that the challenge is over, I went back and looked to see which photo was yours. I see you were one of the few I got around to commenting on, and that I was in the group of people who didn't see a connection to topic.

On the other hand, I said why. Hopefully, even if you disagree, that made it more palatable a comment.

LauraK, no offense, but I agree with all who thought that a spider in isolation didn't convey 'garden'.

This could be your closet for all we know.

Best of luck!
