Can anyone tell me if the use of something like The Imaging Factory's Convert To B&W Pro is allowed for Basic Editing challenges? Trying to find a better way to do B&W conversion, but want to stay within the rules.

I don't know that one, but Fred Miranda's B/W Workflow Pro is definitely not basic-legal. It uses all sorts of layers in its processing. For basic editing, I'd stick with doing it by hand to be on the safe side. There are several legal ways to do it, and they work fine except in the most difficult cases.

Robt.

I would have to say the best way to convert to black and white and stay within basic rules is the Channel Mixer.

Can get into some issues with filters.

Yeah that or doing it in RAW. Even though I don't use the EOS capture software that came with the 20D it does give you some options to converting to b/w including using red, green, orange and yellow filter settings.

Thanks for all the replies. That is what I was expecting but just wanted to check. Was'nt happy with my initial attempts at getting a good black and white conversion. Looks like I will just have to do some more experimentation with the channel mixing methods.
