This may be a dumb question...

I've never used an external flash before. I put the 420EX on my 350D and it does not adjust the exposure when I'm shooting in aperture or shutter priority. It only seems to work right in P, or I have to adjust it myself in manual? Is this right, am I doing something wrong, or is there a problem???

Thanks!

That's the way that it's supposed to work...

This article explains everything that you could ever want to know about Canon flashes:
//photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/

The short story is that in Av or Tv modes the background will be exposed correctly and the flash will be used for fill on the foreground. In P mode the flash is used as the main light source and if the background happens to be porperly exposed, lucky for you.

Correct. All you have to do is adjust the flash with the dial on the flash to brighten or darken the foreground.
