This may be a dumb question...
I've never used an external flash before. I put the 420EX on my 350D and it does not adjust the exposure when I'm shooting in aperture or shutter priority. It only seems to work right in P, or I have to adjust it myself in manual? Is this right, am I doing something wrong, or is there a problem???

That's the way that it's supposed to work...
This article explains everything that you could ever want to know about Canon flashes:

The short story is that in Av or Tv modes the background will be exposed correctly and the flash will be used for fill on the foreground. In P mode the flash is used as the main light source and if the background happens to be porperly exposed, lucky for you. |

Correct. All you have to do is adjust the flash with the dial on the flash to brighten or darken the foreground.
