Now that I can to read the comments on Arnit's toast picture... well... I cannnot even begin to imagine how frustrating each and every one of those absolute dismissals as 'fake' must have been. I mean, come on! So many people didn't even allow the chance that it could be real! It's quite a bold statement to make, especially when it's 100% WRONG.

I do not envy you, Arnit. My sympathies.

The problem is it's such a great picture it looks like a fake.

My husband and I had an argument over whether or not your picture was fake... I thought it was fantastic, and not fake.. he thought it might have been. I've since proved him wrong. How exactly did you do it?

Last night I stated that I thought it was a fake. I though the toaster should be reflecting some more light than it was. Then Arnit replied and showed me a new picture of the toaster, where he zoomed in and cropped the toaster. I saw it did reflect some. I was wrong, it's not a fake. It's just a great shot.

Arnit, someone once said that art is something you either love or hate. In other words, your shot really stirred up the crowd and for that you get huge kudos from me. Especially since you did it with a camera.

The first idea was to have my uncle throw a basketball over his head and then look normal. I thought that would look fine but not great. I was driving home after taking some pictures and then it hit me. Why not use a toaster? I called my uncle and we went toaster-hunting. I got one for only 6 dollars and it had one week guaranty. I bought the bowl I smashed at the same place.

We drove out off town and found I nice spot. He simply threw the toaster, with 2 taosts in it, over his head and tried to look normal. I had my camera in burst mode so I was able to shoot around 6-8 shots each session. I took some 140 shots and some times it came pretty close hitting him :)

Mousie: Thanks for your sympathies.

Maby next time I'll try to take a picture that dose not look fake.

I'm not all that disappointed. I got some really great comments on my shot and I thank you all for that.

No one needs to point fingers at Arnit. He has proven his picture is genuine and he deserves all the praise we can give him.

People should trust the site admins here, they will remove a picture if its fake. If a shot is still in the challenge beyond the first couple of days you can bet its a real shot.

I wonder how many here that voted the photo low due to their suspicions will come here now..eat their crow...and congratulate Arnit on his photo?

Yeah, all those ones and twos are just plain wrong! I hope those people feel very bad about their votes now. But at least they can hide behind their anonymity. There is just no way someone in their right mind can give this picture the benefit of the doubt and vote so low on it when it could be the very definition of stopped action. We can still rate it high in case it is real and at the same time have it looked into for disqualification. We are not supposed to be judging pictures for authenticity in our votes!

Don't worry, I'm much better now. Monday morning ya know.

Exactly timj351....

We don't vote on the authenticity. We vote on the photo as it stands in front of us. Maybe it's jealousy or something else but it's wrong.

This photo was the very definition of stop action. If you don't choose it as your best I can understand that. I had this photo in the top 10 but some others hit me stronger.

But no way does this photo deserve thos 1's...no way.

Maybe we should give a green ribbon to the photo that the most people express outrage over it not getting a better vote! :)
04/22/2002 01:37:53 PM · #14
hehe mousie :-)

I don't know why it gets to me that people dump on photos based on everything BUT the photographic nature of the image.

But if you see 1's on a photo that is so clearly good that it breaks the bounds of mediocrity at least you wonder if all this voting cr@p is even worth the time.
04/22/2002 01:57:05 PM · #15
I think they need to look at the people voting the 1s and see if they really know how to vote. I mean I see a couple shots that were not very good (2 - 4 by my standards) that got 10s.

Even though its about how peoples opinions I dont know how a good shot gets a 1 and a poor shot gets a 10. Do people have mulitple accounts and give themselves 10s and intentionally hand out low numbers to drop the better shots?

Geez I am taking this too personal and I have not even submitted a photo hahaha.

Well I guess I will be upset this time next week when I submit my photo for this challenge :)

Well, it's an open board vote so you can get all kinds.

There are the haters, contrarians, vote-skewers, etc, etc. Because this forum is so open you could get a bunch of 5th graders to sighn up and just go around throwing voting grafitti everywhere.

I am a member of a musicians site that has voting and comptetions, mainly head to head stuff. Voting is broken down like this.

1 vote to the general web site surfer or "member"

2 votes to a submitter of music.

5 votes to the people who stay in the top performing "winning" percentage.

The idea is that general members are casual and don't take the voting as serious as contributors. Likewise, contributors that do well consistently have an obvious skill set and have earned the right to stand as a greater judge of talent.

I like the idea a lot if only to lessen the casual "I'll vote to screw with people" attitude.

I'm not sure if I agree with a 1, 2 and 5 vote breakdown.

Maybe 1 vote for general members. 2 votes for contributors and 3 votes for the top ten vote getters of the last round.

Ideas?

ok... the thing is also... you've gotta realize that people have different opinions. Some things that you think suck, others might see something in them that they believe is really great and to them that IS what makes the image. I'm sure some people will give other people bad marks just to be jerks, but that's just to be expected in any voting situation.
04/22/2002 02:54:29 PM · #18
Stillwatch...

No question that there are different opinions. I agree with everything you say..no argument.

I would not want to keep people from voting their opinions in any way. I was just kicking around some ideas to combat the typical open web site, casual voter screwing around.

What folks here have to decide is how tight a community they want to build. I don't have an opinion of where it needs to go..I'm just glad there are a good number of talented people here already I get to talk to.

What do you think to ALL voters having to comment when voting including those not submitting pics?
Voters who give out 1's and 2's for pics that finish up in the top three should be willing to stand by their vote with comments to explain why they so disliked the image or thought it did not conform to the challenge or the rules.
I notice in the latest challenge results that all comments received are shown - rather than the last 10 - another admin triumph!, would it not be fair to show the score given with the comment? this might people more careful with their votes - just my thoughts.

I have only been here for 2 weeks and can already see where i have voted low on Pics whose technical quality is actually quite good. but my vote is my overall impression. If we had Overall/Technical and Image breakdowns, i can see some getting both a 1 and a 10 frm me. but as it is we have to go with the overall. No amount of technical saavy will make me like a pic I just don't like.

The toaster is not one of them BTW. Not sure i even voted on that, but I woudl have given it average because it just didn't move me. Maybe it is superficial, and maybe i am looking for art and not technical displays of photographic wizardry.

What does all this mean? Just casting my vote for the "ones and tens deserve a comment" crowd.
