Hmmm... Bamaster feels that this is a bad idea. This type of segregation can only fuel the animosity those already have against these individuals. Not terribly sure what could be taught differently or why their needs are different. Does this mean we'll have schools for midgets, the overweight, those that stutter, etc.???

Friggin liberals....

From the article:
"I think everybody feels that it's a good idea because some of the kids who are gays and lesbians have been constantly harassed and beaten in other schools," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Monday. "It lets them get an education without having to worry."

From me:
He then added "We're also looking forward to the opening of the New York School for Abused Star Wars and Star Trek Fans that's opening in 2004. Commitees have been formed to look into schools for comic book fans, goth fanatics, and excessively clumsy individuals."

This is as absurd as trying to solve racism with segregation.

They want to stand out and be seperated so they have a reason to complain. Lately they have been more and more accepted, and now they need a new way to seperate themselves from everyone else, instead of just living. I for one don't care if someone is gay, but don't think they should have special privleges because of it, including seperate schools. Unless it is a private school, which even then is questionable. I couldn't open a all white school.

Sure you can, as long as you don't accept public monies or care about mainstream public opinion.

this is funny and just shows how stupid the country is becoming. within 20 years there will be an all polygamist school for children born to 7 mothers because eventually that will happen the way things are going.

I think it really means when you see a beautiful rainbow, you'll have to get on your knees to the 6% minority of the population and say "yes boss".

if the difference is how or with who they have sex with, than we need schools for dildo users, hand masturbates, sheep lovers, bestiality, necrophiliacs, masochists, etc..

Maybe I should pornolize my text?

Anyone who has recently attended a high school with openly gay students is probably aware that "they" don't need to make any extra efforts to stand out from everyone else, nor to "they" probably need any extra reasons to complain. From my observations there are plenty of students who are more than willing to make sure that gay students are pointed out and given reasons to complain.
I'm not opposed to this on the grounds that gays are just whining about trouble in schools. I haven't a single doubt that they do recieve undue abuse. It's just that separation never breeds acceptance, only isolation and contempt.

And for the record, anytime you lump an entire group of people into a collective "they" and start making statements about what "they" want, you're probably overgeneralizing at best, and indulging in ignorant assumptions at worst.

no one is herding these kids into this school -- it's a safe haven that they can go to in order to be educated. yeah, everyone gets teased in school and it sucks. BUT there are some people who are railed on so incessantly that they fight back or drop out -- both of which just cause more problems.

yeah, segregation was/is a bad idea. but i'm sure a lot of black people had a problem with integration because moving to a mixed school made them an instant target for everyone else.

if people weren't so ignorant -- and if people wouldn't teach their kids to be so ignorant -- than this wouldn't be an issue. as it is now, i guess the best we can hope for is an ignoramus-shield. i sure as hell know i wish i had one.

admit it, bamaster... you'd be the first to sign up for a school for sheep lovers. heck, you'd probably be their FFA chapter president. :P

They are probably going to a school where they don't have to listen to stuff like that posted in this thread.

I suggest everyone re-read the site TOS before continuing with the excessive hyperbole--this here is NOT a Rant thread, and is bordering on (IMNSHO) a violation of site rules even if it were.

I notice a lot of mind-readers out there seem to know the motivations behind this "event" but that not one of them has actually asked for a factual explanation, so that they can then express an opinion based on reality instead of their imaginations.

I for one am deeply offended by the blatant homophobia being expressed in this thread.

Thank you GeneralE for your comments.

The whole issue has it's good and bad points. But I do believe a lot of it stems from parents complaining that the gay and lesbian students might try and "convert" there straight children. So the school district has said it is to protect the students from fighting and such rather than deal with the real issues.

I wouldn't say so much a liberal thing as it was a way to avoid having to educate the general public on the gay and lesbian lifestyle.

Homophobia? Please point this out, because I don't see it. If anything, this thread is about the political retards that fold under the pressure from a tiny minority. This is the same mentality that is challenging the word God in our Pledge of Allegiance. And homophobia is what you see?

Besides, isn't it against the rules to show Public Displays of Affection in public school systems? How would students actually know if a student is gay or not? So is this school for students that "act" in stereotypical gay ways? So if I were to be gay-ish, could I be one of these 100 elite students with specialized attention with great teacher-to-student ratios that are not found in any other public schools just becuase these people feel persecuted? Isn't this a slap in the face of the entire civil rights movement? Poor Rosa Parks is turning in her grave something fierce!

I'll tell you what. If I mention how Operation Iraqi freedom is causing US lives while they STILL ain't found no WMD, can we leave this thread open, purty please?

Do they not realize that they are making these students extremely easy targets? Kids will just be making trips after school to go harass "the gays." It'll be worse now that they know these kids are gay, where as before, they were most likely just assuming based on rumors and behavior.

Actually, from the sounds of it this school is being used for extreme cases. These aren't closeted gays that have rumors going around about them. I think these are usually openly gay students who dress and act significantly different than other students, and are consequently intensely harassed to the extent that they would probably otherwise drop out of school.
Here is an article about a different, but similar, school which is private. The article gives a bit more of a feel for what students attend this kind of school.

Oh yeah, and I originally assumed this was in the rant forum. It seems like that's where it should be.
