I am thinking about getting the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM. Anyone have it and happy with the results? I want to use this lens to take basketball photos. I assume this lens will do a great job. Ive looked at photos taken with this lens, but didnt see any sports shots. FYI, Ive been using my 5omm and that works great, but focusing sucks.

My friend has it and when I played with her camera it was great. If I had canon this would be my first lens. I think what you looking for is 70-200 f2.8 VR. It would be more appropriate for basketball.

Ive used my 70-200 for basketball, but i kind of want something alittle more wide. I am opinion to other lens suggestions. Lets just say my budget is no more than $1400

It does seem a little wide for basketball unless you are sitting courtside and want lots of wide shots to get the entire action on the court.

I've heard only good things about the lens, but my issue was always that it didn't fall into a good scheme for covering various ranges with various lenses. The 17-40L is one to think about, although it may not be fast enough for you.

I sit right on the baseline. usually a couple feet to the side of the basket, so i am EXTERMELY close to the basket. In fact I got run over two nights in a row. I got the shot though, and thats what matters right?

PM Setzler, I think he's been shooting a lot of B Ball lately.

I think he mostly uses his 24-70L, but I could be wrong.

I think the 24-70 would be a much better lens for basketball than the 16-35...

I would like to have a wide lens. Does anyone know of any basketball photos taken with a 16-35. I looked through a bunch of photos but didnt see anything

I personally don't know anyone who shoots basketball with a lens that wide. I have been using my 50mm f/1.4 and my 24-70 f/2.8. I also occasionally use the 70-200 f/2.8 to shoot stuff out at mid court. If I was using the 16-35, I would only be able to fill my frame with stuff that was very close to the baseline...

I always use my 70-200mm F/2.8 lense to shoot basketball.

Hi-ho,

I've shot a bit of netball with my 17-40, which is the same sized court.. Standing right on the base line it's 'interesting' what you get at 17mm, but not that practical for what I need. 90% of my usable shots from netball have been with the 70-200, and a few from the 24-70.

Netball is daytime outdoors, but the wide coverage issue is very similar...

For example:

I'm probably 2ft from the base line, and the nearest player is about to stand on the line.

The photos tend to be too busy for the paper to publish, so I don't bother. I've had a few I like, but nothing published so I stopped taking the 17-40 to netball games.

The other problem I found was wide angle DOF issues.. The focus plane for a wide angle rectilinear lens is flat, but you perceive action around you in an arc. When wide open, wide angle lenses can produce weird looking images of action simply because it dosn't look like we expect it to.. Hard to explain without an example, and I've not got the motivation to hunt through my photos to find one...

Just my 2c worth, John S and Arnit are the indoor men :-).

Cheers, Me.
