i've been looking for lenses especially on ebay, but i'm a bit suspicious of used lenses on ebay. anybody have any good or bad experiences they can share to help me decide whether to buy from there or not

I sell stuff on ebay all the time (and have bought stuff). It's hit or miss so look for someone with good feedback and a return policy. I bought my Tamron 19-35 from someone on there and couldn't be happier with it. My Canon 70-300 IS that I bought is impeccably sharp but may have the portrait problem that plagues some of these so choose your seller well.

In my personal opinion, I don't think ebay is a great place to get used lenses. I have seen used lenses there sell for more than a new one costs. I personally sold a 50mm f/1.8 lens there for $106 and I only paid $79 for it when I bought it new. I have watched lenses quite frequently on ebay and the price you will pay will probably be close to what a new lens costs. I would spend a few dollars extra to get a warranty on new glass.

Honestly, I've bought lenses on ebay, but I limit it to old manual lenses that have a small group of interested buyers. For modern lenses, ebay prices seem to be too high; too many folks bidding and running up the prices. Popular lenses sometimes go for as much or slightly more than the best new prices(!).

I bought three used from eBay last fall, all in great shape. Best of all, the three of them cost less than the one new lens I was looking at would have, and cover a better range. You have to be careful with eBay; if you have any doubt about a listing at all, best to just ignore it and keep looking. I found that with patience, you can get a good, honest deal.

I have bought camera gear of ebay, mostly from the same supplier. A lens or two and a Canon Eos 5 slr. I have also bought other camera related equipment, film, camera bag etc and had no problems. You just have to do some research on the sellers. I can only go by my experience but they have all been excellent buys. I only buy from within the UK

I got my 80-200 2.8 AF-S in 95 % shape Great deal at 600.00
and I got my 60mm 2.8 Nikor Mirco for 299. mint 100% shape

Perfect deals on 2 great lenses. I saved about 800 usd off of retail but I had to look for a while and get lucky in the auction. But I would do it again.

His question seems to have been addressed to his satisfaction, so let me add that I found a new Nikon D200 with a Buy It Now price of $850!?!

I saw it a couple of nights ago and emailed the seller to ask point blank why he is selling these at half price. He didn't answer directly, just seemed to have a canned reply about the product being brand new and in the box, asked me to send name, address, phone number, and that eBay Staff will contact me with payment instructions.

On the listing, he stated that he only accepts wire transfers and that it would be done through eBay so that the transaction would be safe.

A lot didn't seem right about this whole thing, so I hesitated. The next day I couldn't find the listing anywhere and the end of that auction had not passed.

I wonder if this was all legitimate.

Edit for typo

bought a defective 10d and the seller would not take a return , Luckly I used a credit card and I contacted them and they told to return it and make them sign for it, The key is to not let the seller know you returning it because if they don't except it then you have another problem and then I open a case and they refunded my money , I guess they got the money from them . So always use a credit card

I bought my Canon 100-400 IS 'L' and my Canon 16-35 f2.8 'L' from eBay without problem. Both lenses were £lots and I have to admit I was a little scared, however if you try and check out the seller, ask lots of questions then you should be OK.

Yeah there are scams but ebay is quick to respond to them. I saw one selling a D2X for 1200 usd I read the description and it said they would not take paypal. I thought it odd but put in a bid anyway. I got a email from ebay about an hour later telling me they removed the item from auction because it was a scam. I guess for me I will only buy form someone willing to use paypal because of the buyer protection it offers plus paypal is ebay so if a listing sayes it wont take paypal they dont get my money.

Not accepting PayPal or credit cards was the second of the many red flags for me. I was tempted but it seemed to good to be true.

BTW, Ritz camera is expecting to stock quite a few D200's by Wednesday afternoon. The camera body will be $1699, the kit with the 18-70 will be about $1849 and the kit with the 18-200VR will be about $2399. Those prices are from memory so they might be off a bit, but they are lower than what they are going for on eBay right now.

I bought a Nikon 80-200mm AF-D lens off ebay and was very pleased with it. Make sure the seller accepts paypal and has 100% positive feedback and a return policy and you probably can't go wrong. I prefer to buy from people who are the owners/users of the camera equipment. I don't like to buy from a dealer who is selling used equipment. I usually ask the person if they are the original owner of the lens.

Ebay advice: Be patient and wait for the right deal from the right person and you'll be fine. Don't just bid on the first one you see, take your time and find a seller who has owned the lens since it was new and can tell you about it.

yeesh, those ebay scams can get tiring sometimes. my buddy got scammed with his phone, but he argued a lot to ebay and to paypal, and paypal ended up refunding him all his money, and even allowing him to keep the faulty product (it was a phone but had arabic letters instead of english ones), which was still a 200 dollar phone. paypal is good because it always favors the buyer in any ambiguous situation - it's the seller's responsibility to keep records perfectly so as to refute any accusation with proper documents. learned this the hard way selling on ebay and not keeping the reciepts. a customer complained that he never got his shipment, couldn't find the shipment reciept, lost the product, lost the payment, still had to pay paypal and ebay fees, BLEH

NEVER send money through a wire transfer for an auction item. NEVER, Never.. I'm speaking from personal experience here. They'll have you send the money to some place out of the country and you'll never see your item. Like the same quote above from thegrandwazoo, if the seller doesn't want to use a more secure transfer method like paypal, they are probably trying to scam you, imo.

Luckily for me it was not to much of an expensive lesson to learn. When I got scammed it was through Yahoo auctions (about 3 years ago). I would suggest staying away from Yahoo auctions too. At least through eBay you have to register with a credit card to sell things, so there is a slight chance of getting your money back or getting the person tracked down. Yahoo doesn't have anything in place to help you if you get scammed (or at least they didn't when it happened to me).

I have recently bought a lot off ebay for my Canon.

I also have one of my lenses up for sale.

My suggestions. I always read the feedback before I buy and will only use paypal.
