Sigma has announced that 5 of their pre-existing lenses in other mounts will now be available for the 4/3rds standard. They are:
30mm f1.4 EX DC/HSM (long awaited prime with very narrow DOF, yeah!)
50-500 f4-6.3 EX DG/HSM (affordable super long tele, up to 1000mm)
18-50 f2.8 EX DC (good all-around walk-around)
105mm f2.8 EX DG Macro
APO Macro 150mm f2.8 EX DG/HSM

Does anyone who uses these lenses from other systems have any recommendations/experiences they can share?

So.. These are lenses, that cover a 24x36mm sized film (except the 30/1.4 and the 18-50/2.8)?

Why would someone want to use them on an Olympus dSLR? So much wasted glass/weight/money.

Then again. Olympus's tele lens prices are total rip-off.

I could be wrong, but I assume that these lenses have been redesigned with the 4/rds image circle and not with a 35mm image circle, and will have a size and weight to match.

so is the bigma actually a redesigned 25-250 or is it a 50-500 and the 2x crop gives it a 100-1000?

The second..
With the crop factor 100-1000.
And they wouldn't be a redesign except for the mount and AF anymore than they would be for FF or 1.6 crop.
Just more choices and cheaper prices.

I hear good things about hte bigma, so that is good.
I have the 18-50 2.8 and it is fine above f3.5 or 4, a bit soft below that and not as good at low light focus as i might like.
f2.8

f4

f5.6

all unedited 100% crops

I love my Sigma 30 f/1.4! But I must say, I've got a good sample that focuses spot on and has little corner softness. It is freakin sharp at f/1.4.

A sample gallery with fullsize original 6mp samples can be found here:

Oh my oh my, I'm excited. The 150 & 30mm is going on my wish list (unless Leica has better prime options with their 4/3rds announcment tomorrow). Time to eBay my 50-200?

Now I wish Sigma would come out with a Olympus compatable DG-500 flash. The Olympus FL-50 is just way too expensive, and I need to take naps waiting for my FL-36 to recycle.

I was just rereading an old issue of Popular Photography, I think it was a Dec. 05 issue, and it states that Sigma is the one making all those cropped lenses for Olympus anyway. Just like Tamron makes some lenses for KM.

I guess if you have a KM or an Oly, it would seem silly to put down these "third market" lenses. =)

I agree we shouldn't "put down" third party lenses, cause many are making great lenses now. Years gone by third party lens manafacturers had a well earned bad reputation.

I think you misread the PP article, in that Sigma made the 18-50, 55-200, and the 18-125 for the 4/3 system. Why would of the premier optical manafacturer farm out their lenses, except for maybe their cheaper kit lenses like Nikon does? Plus I've owned several of Sigma's better lenses, and they weren't even close to the quality of Olympus' current lenses (build quality, weather protection, etc).

don't know. I'm just repeating what I read in Poular Photography.
