Can someone please tell me about this lens or where to find some info on it?

From what I gather, it is a new version of the 85mm f/1.2L lens. But is the new one not an L lens? It has the red stripe...

What's the deal with it? I saw it on the promo pic for the 30d and WOW it is sweet looking.

Thanks,
E

Yup it is......but good article & a bit of background on this great glass, regardless of configuration.

$2100?!?!?! Wow - it's as awesome as it is pricey.

The original 85/1.2L was one of my dream lenses, but this new version is priced about $800 more (assuming the article quotes US $). A frequent complaint about the original was that is slow to autofocus and apparently Canon has addressed that problem. I wonder though if the optics are identical in both versions? In fact, I may consider the glass to be half full, so to speak, if the price for used 85/1.2s drops into a more affordable range.

The MSRP sseems high, but time will tell what the street price really is. Bear in mind that the old version is currently selling for $1500, so I think the street pricing on the new version will not be that much different, but who knows?
I would love to rent it for a week, but can't see buying it. I can buy a good used 300/2.8L (non-IS) for a few hundred more, LOL.

I'm not sure about the lens. I found that at f1.8, the DOF is so shallow, on any subject that isn't flat, some part of it was OOF. I've seen a headshot with a 85mm f1.2 at f1.2 and the DOF was so shallow that the nose but not the eyes were in focus.

I'm sure that there are some purists that will insist on faster and faster and more expensive lenses but I for sure won't be buying one.

Hard to justify $1500 for the 85mm f1.2L, either Mk I or Mk II, when the 85mm f1.8 sells for about $350 and carries the same rating at FM, 9.5. The f1.8 already has the fast focusing ring-type USM that is the upgrade seen in the Mk II.

Sounds like a problem on the photographers end... like using auto-focus rather than manual.
