I'm going to the Del Mar Racetrack on Sunday, and thought I'd try some panning shots. I won't have a tripod.

I got fairly decent panning with my EOS, but that's a much heavier camera and it didn't have the LCD screen (which I find difficult to use on an action shot).

Anyone have any suggestions about holding the camera? Can anyone suggesting setting -- ISO, aperture, shutter speed?

Thanks.

You won't want a tripod for panning anyway. I sometimes use a folded up monopod tucked under my shoulder, but most of the time just handhold. Use the viewfinder and practice smoothly following your subject as much as possible. You should eventually be able to tell when you've got a good shot before you hit the button. Keep panning after you've pressed the shutter to ensure a nice smooth movement.

You should set ISO as low as possible, and set the aperture to get the shutter speed that you want. What shutter speed you use depends on how fast whatever you're shooting is moving (horses by the looks?) and how close you are. Shooting fast cars from a few metres away I started out at 1/320-1/400s. Now after a fair bit of practice I shoot between 1/50 and 1/100s.

Also pre-focus on the spot where the horse will be when you plan to press the shutter.

Start out with a fairly fast shutter, stay calm, and take as many shots as you can. Most of all, have fun!
