I attended this photo contest last night to see what the local Sarasota "photographers" are doing. It was a bunch of old guys who were learing how to use Photoshop. I'm talking an orgy of PS filters. Things like radial blur, plastic wrap, inked outlines, paint daubs. I feel so discouraged and un-motivated.

why let a bunch of no-talent hacks discourage you because they need to disguise their bad photography with filters? Keep experimenting until you find your groove then let it all hang out for the world to see.

if anything, be encouraged by their lack of talent - we need them to make us look better ;)

Personally, I LOVE what I do. Noone could ever discourage me so much as to make me quit shooting. If that group doesn't inspire you, find another group. Just don't let others change your mind about what you like to do.

Like P-man and Cindi says, just find your groove and settle with something you like doing and are comfortable with. Don't let others mislead you and take you down the wrong path. Eventually, it's only yourself that you will try to satisfy and please. Go out and shoot and see how enjoyable this hobby (or work) of ours really is ;)

I've always been a Point & Shoot shutterbug, but now that I have this Rebel... the sound it makes when I take a shot, and the way I can feel the 'click'... just makes me want to click all the time. Burst mode is orgasmic.

It's unfortunate when you can't find a group locally that you feel inspired to work with but we're pretty lucky with this big ol' internet and all - I'm sure you can find a group of people online with ideals similar to yours. I certainly don't think one mediocre local group is reason to give up. I also think that crazy filters are a stage that lots of people go through when they first get Photoshop, at least to try them out. It doesn't necessarily mean that they'll stick with it forever (although it's true that some do).

Ahhh ... can't wait til I have a clicking digi in my hand, a beep just doesn't feel right. Oh the feel of a moving mirror and the "click" ... ahhhh

I very much agree.

Well, you're 20 ... things like computers and Photoshop or even digital cameras are much easier for you than the "old guys" in the filter orgy. I think you've got talent, at least from what you've shown in the challenges. So, don't let it get ya down. Just keep shooting.

I dont like when people judge me from my chalenges, it is far from a reflection of what I do, and what inspires me.

I am a student at an art school, and I have second major in photography. Our teacher brought in this "great" photographer one day. One that inspires her. "Jerry Ulesman style" she claims. He didnt know a thing. He kept asking us how to do simple things in photoshop. It was quite humorous. I slept through the whole ordeal.

I just dont know where to go from here. Im 20 and I know what I want to do, but no one wants to see it. Well... Im having trouble finding those who do.

Well, you might want to get your hands on the 20D at some point. It's got a very loud shutter. Perhaps this is why Canon made it this way???

People are people, most suck, some are worth all the trouble they didn't cause. No one has to know where to go, particularly not at 20, and if no one wants to see your work, well, why not take pictures for no one. He seems to be interested.

Seriously.

Keep going, and hopefully we will be allowed to see better reflection of your work here in the challenges, or elsewhere. Keep it up, keep it up!
