I'm starting to see a patter develop. I'm see recognizable members as part of the photo. I feel this may sway scores for the good or bad.

I feel that you should get a model if you need a person in the shot.

But get a new model for each entry.

I can tell you from my experience that it doesn't sway voters toward a good vote ... LOL

I do this alot...but I usually can't find a model that works with my schedule...and besides it's just easier to do it myself!

And who is going to pay for that? I'm here for fun, and if I need a model there is usually a few somewhere around the house that do it (mostly) for free. ;^)

Are you really suggesting that we stop doing self-portraits??? That's absurd.

If you are here long enough, you'll be able to recognize member's spouses, kids, friends and other models as well. Not only that, but just by looking at a shot, you will also be able to reasonably guess who shot it based on the style, composition, treatment, location etc. There's nothing wrong with that.

Many people on here do not have the resources to hire models for a challenge, nor, do they have the time to schedule a shoot, coordinating with someone outside their usual circle of family and friends. If you have that luxury, great, but it's simply not reasonable to expect that everyone else does too. From my experience, it's usually about getting someone who is at hand, in many cases, the only possibility may be the photographer, especially if, like me they wind up shooting when most sensible people are asleep.

Spaz beat me to the punch... I was just about to say that if you're here long enough to recognize photographer self-portraits, then you begin to recognize other aspects of individual photographer's work too. I know there are a number of "styles" that I can usually identify with a reasonable degree of accuracy, along with members of several photographer's immediate family & friends who frequently end up in their images. :-) I don't think it sways my vote one way or the other - I try to view every shot on its own merit. But that's just me...

What else? Stop taking pictures of people as well? It's not that easy to find models you know.

Don't hate us just because you're ugly :P

I'm joking! I'm joking! Now please laugh!

Aye, I'm an amateur... the idea of "getting a model" is odd to me...

edit: though having a family or friend stand in as one isn't :)

You mean if I use myself as a model, I'll get a better score?? Cool!! Now if I could only get over my hatred for being photographed. :-)

Borrowing from one of my favorite photographers on this site(thanks, ellamay):

I don't have any models!

02/15/2006 12:05:13 PM · #21
I actually agree with the original post...in a sense.

I also don't like it when people use the same models...over and over and over again...especially if they are DPC favorites...being either the photographer or the model.

I know many of us have limited access to models...I for example, have none but I still would appreciate the anonymity thang and wish people would use some more disgression....especially when it comes to certain photographers.

I'm sure that opinion might piss some people off but it is how I feel.

Worked for me. Two of my highest scoring entries were the photos of myself. Not that anyone can recognize me here, so I'm not worried that much. Once people start recognizing me and scoring me lower, I'll start wearing wigs and I'll put some lipstick on.

edit: spellcheck

There was no mention of a better score :) My current entry is bombing!

very interesting, maybe it has to do with the third place for the shadow challenge? everyone knows joey and most people like him so he gets the high vote??? i liked his photo but not enough to get a ribbon.. IMO i'm sure it got the ribbon because of all his fans.

If you do pay for a model, don't make the mistake I did:
$2.95 models are problematic
