I am going over to Hawaii and will be doing a fair amount of hiking. Anyone have any suggestions for a compact monopod I can take with to get better shots?

Just for fun, here's a couple of photos I shot hand-held last year.

Great shots! I wanna go too!!!!

I use a Velbon monopod with a Manfrotto monopod head. I like the extremely light-weight mono for easy carrying - and the manfrotto head makes me feel all safe and secure. It even has a handy locking mechanism on the quick release plate so some nice theif doesn't pass by and quick release it for you. :)

Polkop,

Any issues with that tripod on really uneven ground? Seems like it could be a hassle messing with three legs on a hiking path.

Here is what I use:

I use the Explorer model. It's three products in one. Walking/hiking stick, rifle rest, and camera/scope monopod. Plus you can get different accessories for it as well, to make it just that much more useful.

I use this Bogen Manfrotto 694 Its light and Strong and since I am 6'8" it stands tall enough that I dont have to slouch.

These all look good. I will take a serious look at them.

Thanks for the input.

Another fan of the 694. Monopods can act as a walking stick on rough ground, and look pretty imposing when they are suddenly shot out to full extention if you feel threatened.

I don't see the 694 on my suppliers website, but they have the 681B The only differences I can see is this one can hold more weight, but it's slightly heavyer and slightly shorter than the 694. And it's made of Black Anodized Aluminum, rather than carbon fiber, is this a major facture? It's only 0.3Kg differnce in weight. Any body have it?

Ok I found it, but they called it a Manfrotto Magfiber Monopod 4 Section

Ok guys, So whats the big deal with Carbon fiber? There doesn't seem to be a hugh differnce in weight, so it it just that it can take more of a bashing than a Anodized Aluminum pod? The price is certainly a big differnce.
