an ultra-compact the size of the Nikon S1 (or smaller) but has the quality of a dSLR (minus the mounts and all, of course). And I dont mind it having only the basic manual controls of aperture + shutter speeds. It will suffice!

Slap an 8mp back on my Nikon FE2 and call it a done deal.

Take the sensor out of the 1Ds mkII and put it in a body slightly larger than the 350D, BUT BULLET PROOF TITANIUM

I'll take a 20mp camera with an awesome sensor and a sharp, fast, quiet, 10-500mm f/1.4 lens on the end of it. Do they make that?

full sensor, 22 mp, 10 fps raw, super fast buffer, latest high tech sensor, titanium & magnesium body, weather proof, internal stabalizer, large lcd with a flip up hood, manuel, AV, P, TV, and bulb modes, White balance adjust including WB for sodium vapor, and mercury vapor light, 25 ISO - 6400 ISO, and the all important...

...cup holder.

10-500 f1.4 hmmm letme think ... that lens would have to be the size of well Hubble

Well, I'd start with a lens of approximately the size of the Hubble telescope. add a 10x13 sized sensor boom mounted on the back of a 2-ton pickup ;-)

Better yet a "Hubble" lens that also zooms down to ultra wide yet shoots like a prime.

For a point-and-shoot, I'd want something with pretty big, low-noise sensor (resolution not a big deal, the sensor in my XT is pretty good, I'd rather it be 5mp if it had perfect ISO 1600 performance) and a 50mm 1.4 lens on it. Burst rate not too important, 3fps is fine. Magnesium/carbon fiber body might be pretty neat. Full manual controls, no on-camera flash, no huge LCD. Fairly compact, about the size of an A70 would be good.

2. no detectable noise.
3. 1:20X zoom with zero distortion and f/1.4 throughout the range.
4. Builtin VR.
5. Builtin self cleaning for the sensor.
6. Capable of using multiple memory card formats.
7. 5000+ shots per battery charge.
8. Live 4 inch lcd display.
9. Iso adjustable from 20 to 6400.
10. Price under $200!

Hey, if I'm gonna dream, may as well dream big!

I'm a little more down to earth.

I'd take a Foveon style 8mp (times 3 = 24mp) sensor on a 20D style body at 1.3x conversion for the larger sensors and still a bit of extra performance on the telephoto lenses.

The lenses would be the basics, probably 8mm Peleng, 10-22 Canon (ok, this would have to be a wishlist item as the current one is not compatible with the 1.3x form factor... an equivalent lens would suffice I suppose), 28-75 Tamron, 70-200 (or my 80-200 which I like a lot too) f/2.8 and a tamron 200-500. Throw a 1.4x TC with perfect optics in the mix and we're talking fantasy land sweetness.

Having an additional batterypack/high speed data splitter allowing multiple channel writing from the in-camera buffers, pushing frame rate to 8fps or 10fps would seal the DEAL. Dual or Treble processing units would be necessary to make this technology work, but that's the cheaper part of a camera. The cost of this wouldn't need to be too high if it were made. It would have the potential to eat all other cameras for breakfast in the noise/absolute resulution/color accuracy department as well.

All of this is doable with current technology, but business gets in the way.

When looking through the view finder instead of seeing the EV meter you would be able to see the vote meter 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10. It would also have a built in drive that had all previous challenge entries so the little red dot would blink, not letting me take the picture, when I'm taking a picture similar to one that has been posted before. Then I would add a keypad like a cell phone has so I could enter the challenge topic. It would compare the topic with the picture I have composed and it would flash in the viewfinder DNMC - DNMC - DNMC warning me of my entries potential demise. :P

Although this sounds like a good idea, it seems like it could be some complicated programming and could drive the price up. I would be happy if just an alarm sounded and the shutter button locked up if the photo was crap in general :-P
