Yesterday, I had the great fortune of meeting one of the staff photographers working for National Geographic.

James L. Stanfield was holding a book signing activity at a new local furniture store showcasing a new line of National Geographic home furnishings. Mr. Stanfield was autographing free copies of one of his larger works, a book entitled Inside the Vatican.

My wife and I had a chance to spend some time with Mr. Stanfield since we got there early and the store wasn't too busy yet. We both found Mr. Stanfield to be an incredibly interesting and down to earth man who gladly shared thoughts, anecdotes and experiences lived as a National Geographic staff photographer. When asked by my wife what had been his most memorable experience while working for National Geographic, Mr. Stanfield replied that his work on an NG article that documented the travels of Ibn Battuta, a 14th century explorer/traveller who travelled for 29 years and covered about 75,000 miles visiting the equivalent of 44 modern countries which were then mostly under the governments of Muslim leaders of the World of Islam. Mr. Stanfield told us that he shot close to 15,000 rolls of film on a year-long expedition.

Anyway, just thought I'd share my experience. I'm really glad I met the guy.
