Pick a topic (preferably not sunsets) and have the two open challenges both on that same topic. Have Open Challenge I be limited to those who have an average score on their challenge submissions (as indicated at the time the challenge is announced) of 5.5 or lower. Open Challenge II would be open to those who's average is above 5.5. Might even consider making the Open Challenge II a "no holds barred" as far as editing rules. Or not.

This would give average scorers a chance for more comments, maybe. Then again, maybe not. Just a thought!

How would it give a chance for more comments? I'm not following.

I doubt there are very many DPCers with an average vote received of 5.5 or above. Lord knows I'm not one; I'm under 5.4. But I can't see any easy way to find out what the percentages are. Anyone?

The conglomeration of average vote in the challenges would be the same as the average vote among participants. It would be fairly close to take the last 50 challenges and come up with the average vote received.

If this is designed to try to help those with lower average votes, I'm not sure it will work. I bet people would go to the high average side and vote there first (since they would be more interested in seeing what a "good" picture would be). You might actually get even less comments and votes for the below average folk. I guess it may allow people to get closer to the top in a challenge though.

OK, so maybe not such a good idea. :-)

As I said, 'twas just a thought.

This would be like giving a ribbon to people that don't really deserve it. It sounds like a good idea at first, but I just dont think it is fair.

We've already had a challenge which was limited to non-ribbon winners, Low Tech.

Wow I wasn't aware this could be done.
In this case, maybe we should *really* think about having 2 open challenges, same challenge topic, but each catered for different average scoring members? It would be fun (I think)

There's a lot of very good shooters in DPC who have a relatively low scoring average. I may not qualify as "very good" (it's not for me to say) but I wouldn't be happy being lumped into a lower bracket. I get a lot of low scores because I have a penchant for shooting banal things in a straightforward way; this is what I like to do. And because a lot of the times I push outside peoples' concept of "challenge relevance". I don't really think DPC average scores received are always a true reflection of the quality or seriousness of the work, just its popularity.

So, effectively, the suggestion is to have one challenge for the members who shoot what "the group" likes to look at, and another for the rest of us oddballs who don't "shoot for score". I don't think it's a very good idea.

Maybe if you made the "top" group truly open, anyone could enter, but the bottom group restricted to low-average shooters, that would solve this dilemma...

Some other divisions that might be interesting:

1) P&S in one, SLR in the other
2) Men in one, Women in the other
3) Under 21 in one, 21 and over in the other.

I am not familiar to this one, because being under 5.5, I am not motivated if I cannot challenge together with the great shooters. I left a Hungarian site because there were barely anyone I could have learned from. However, following the ida of the master's free study, a challenge could be released for all the non-ribboned users for fun. :-)

Male Challenge: What Women Think

Female Challenge: What Men Think

Should be good on two counts: the male entries will be full of pictures that will be very funny in their bemusement, and the female challenge will be full of naked women.

I don't think I could handle scoring a whole bunch of shots featuring a hot car, with a hot probably nude female on it drinking a cold probably alcoholic beverage. But it would indeed be, umm, interesting. :-)

Agree with Bear_Music: don't like the idea of having "classes", the "high scorers" and the "low scorers".
As you can see in my scores I would be in the second group, but I preffer to compete with the best photographers in DPC, and not only with low scorers. Imagine I win a ribbon in la low scorer group (why are you laughing so loud????); I will be asking myself if the shot was good enough to win or compete with the high scorers.
I'm not sure if I expose my point clearly, but what my opinion is that this place is great because you can compare your picture with the best shots and learn.
Anyway, just an opinion.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see being among the "low scorers" as "bad" per se - just less experienced or perhaps not as mainstream.

Based on the feedback thus far, though, I'd say the idea isn't a good one and it can die a nice peaceful death at this point.

Can we get ribbons for thread kills? :-)

The beverage wouldn't necessarily have to be cold.
