A guy I work with just bought the canon rebel and wants to get a better lens and I couldn't help him but told him I will ask if you guys have any suggestions. Thanks

thats pretty broad, but if the guy is just looking for a standard walk-around lens a sigma 24-70 f/2.8 or the canon or tamron equivalent would probably be pretty good

I'd suggest finding out what he wants to shoot and what lens he currently has, although I suspect that the latter answer might be the 'kit' lens. It is imperative that his budget be stated, too, as choices depend on how much cash is available. For instance, the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 is very highly regarded, although the Canon 24-70 f/2.8 is slightly better, but at somewhat more of an expense. You then have to factor in how long he would like the lens to 'last' etc. It could also be that he requires a complementary lens, rather than a replacement. If it is, indeed, a replacement that he requires, I would suggest sticking with what he has now and getting used to the camera/lens combo and refining his wishes. There are a million and one different options and opinions.

For telephoto end, most people go for the Sigma 70-300 APO lens that is available on B+H for around a couple hundred dollars US. It also has a passable 'macro' mode. Up to around 1:2 ratio.

Mid-range, either the kit lens or the Tamron mentioned above.

I have a few lenses but I have to say I just purchased the Canon 28-135mm to just keep on the camera and I am VERY happy with it. It was an expensive lens though. So far I haven't taken it off the camera and I can't say that I'm disappointed at all.

I second the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8! It is a great value lens!
