I'd suggest finding out what he wants to shoot and what lens he currently has, although I suspect that the latter answer might be the 'kit' lens. It is imperative that his budget be stated, too, as choices depend on how much cash is available. For instance, the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 is very highly regarded, although the Canon 24-70 f/2.8 is slightly better, but at somewhat more of an expense. You then have to factor in how long he would like the lens to 'last' etc. It could also be that he requires a complementary lens, rather than a replacement. If it is, indeed, a replacement that he requires, I would suggest sticking with what he has now and getting used to the camera/lens combo and refining his wishes. There are a million and one different options and opinions.
