Now that the "Tribute" challenge is over, how about if some of you share how you shot and did the image - there's a lot to learn here (the question came up from Arjun, zxaar, and I think he's right, it would be nice if some of you share how the images were done).

I don’t really want to ruin the intent of this thread since i find it an excellent idea, however this really needs to be said (and those of you who see the kind of posts i usually make know this is very out of character for me but enough all ready)

nsbca7 we all know by now that your shot got DQed, We all know you don’t agree with it, and we all know that you are frustrated by this, However You have to stop trying to turn every threat into a rant board for why you think everyone hates you or your shot. Please Stop taking this so personally, and please allow people on this site the opportunity to learn how to improve their work, stop dominating it by complaining about something that is over and done with.

Well, there wasn't much of a secret to mine, but I studied Kerik Kouklis' landscape work and saw that he worked mostly in sepia/duotones and frequently used trees as subjects in his land ethereal work. There was a tree I passed daily that I had been wanting to photograph for months and thought this would be a good time to do it. I happened to have a day where the sky was wonderfully wispy and "almost" ethereal, so came up with this:

Originally I was going for a blur shot of the King falling over. After experimenting I liked the fading out look better.

Tied a thread to the top of the black King, used the remote shutter release, counted to two slowly (exposure time total was 3.2 seconds) and then pulled the King off the back of the board. By waving the thread slightly during the exposure it didn't really show in the background at all, minor cloning around the back of the King took care of the remaining piece of visible thread.

The background clouds are from the packaging material from one of the kids' toys. Thought it might come in handy some day. ;^)

Well that is how my image was DQ'd. I posted a thread to show how it was done and either someone complained to the SC or one of the SC picked up on it. Excuse me for posting. Get some coffee.

Folks... this is a great thread but I would suggest that the artists duplicate their information with their picture so that a year from now when I'm looking at the picture I can see how it was done.

Thanks!

That is a fantastic image and a great idea nighttrain. I'm a Photoshop moron and was wondering if you (or anyone) could help me out. I understand inverting the image and using color balance on each shoe - but was hoping I could learn a quick way to even out the background. How did you do it? Thanks!

I don't know how nlghttrain does it, but I find the easiest way is to open a curves layer and use the "set white point" dropper tool to select the darkest area of background for a white bg, or the "set black point" dropper tool to select the lightest area for a black bg. It usually takes a few tries to get it just right so probably there's an easier way.

Mine was a fiarly straightforward shot just all about location, location, location. It was a return to the location of my Ansel Adams submission almost a year ago

Rannoch Moor is at the entrance to Glencoe an is an amazingly beautiful and remote place. You can park the car by the road and all around is moorland wilderness with the highlands rising up to the North and West.

Freezing cold and trudging through soft pete moorland I tried several shots untill i spotted the shot that I submitted. The small rock was a lovely echo of the mountain behind and the wide angle portrait lanscape shot was obvious. I used a polariser to cut through the water, you can see the rock below the water on the full size image. One full stop undrexposed since the sky was a bit overcast. Shot in RAW and converted in Rawshooter Essentials. Cloned out a bit of a rock on the LHS that upset the balance, Bit of levels, curves, burn and dodge, resize and post.

Here's an outtake, very near the same spot
