Can somebody please explain to me what an fd means on a canon lens?

FD is an old Canon mount style. It's not compatible with modern EOS cameras.

so, it would not fit on the canon 20d?

No. The 20D has an EOS mount.

Thought the 20d had an EF mount?

Thanks, dumb moment there...I knew the 20d was EOS...going to bed now!!

Do they make an adaptor for the FD lens to fit the 20d?

Now you're really going to confuse the guy. I've heard EOS and EF used interchangeably.

heh...just trying to unconfuse myself...I thought it was EF and then the new(er) EF-S mount as well...I didn't know that EOS was a type of mount is all...my bad.

You can get an FD adaptor for about £20, its a manual only lens but hey, I've seen a 300 f/2.8 sell for about £900

Using an adapter is most often not worth it. There is an aftermarket adpater for around $40 USD but it has optics and will somewhat compromise the performance of the lens. It will act as a weak "teleconverter", prolly about 1.3x and probably will also introduce some visible optical abberations. Canon made two adapters, one with optics and one without. The one without will nt allow infinity focus, but is still good for macro work. The one with optics went for over $200 and was not widely available. It has been discontinued but occasionally turns up on the used market.

I am not 100% sure but I was told that using and FD --> EOS converter would inhibit the len's ability to focus out to infinity. Similar to the effect of a spacing ring placed between the body and lens. I have used this setup to get a closer( larger) image for macro. Does anybody know whether this would in fact play with the focus at longer ranges?

Another though: I have seen large lens converted to EOS on ebay. It stated that it was originally a FD mount and was converted by a camera shop. For a 300/2.8 that would be well worth it for a 100-150 USD (I think ???)

EOS isn't a type of mount, it's a line of cameras. EF is, as is EF-S. Using EOS and EF interchangeably is inacurrate due to the existence of multiple and often incompatible mounts within the EOS line.

Yes, actually converting the mount is a possibility, and so if you're OK with manual focus and manual aperture, it could be worth it.
