In a month, my parents and me are heading out to Kauai for a week. They got one of those deals where they have to sit and listen to a guy talk about time-shares for 4 hours but we get to stay in a resort for 5 days. Well, while they're occupied, I get more shooting time. I'm hoping to be able to buy a new lens by the time February 17th comes around. The only problem is that I've been debating with myself over what to get. My set up now consists solely of the kit lens for the rebel and my Sigma 70-300 APO. I'm looking at lenses in the area of 400 dollars. The stuff I've been looking at so far are the Tokina 12-24, Sigma 10-20, Sigma 15-30, and the Tamron 28-75 (f2.8). I'm big on landscapes and I've found from experience that the kit lens just doesn't cover it. But I'm also missing a good walk-around lens. This is my first time to Hawaii so I'd like to know what anyone thinks, not just about what lens, but if you've been there, what type of shooting to you find yourself doing more of?

The Tamron would definitely be good, but since you like doing landscapes a lot, the Canon 10-22 would be really good. Almost double your budget, but Bear_Music and others recommend it really highly. Maybe sell one of yours if you dont use it much, or something.

I thought about the idea of selling a lens, to get the 10-22, but i would only want to sell the kit lens. And the only problem with that is that I wouldn't even get enough money to cover the difference between the cost and my budget.

Kauai is considered the grand canyon island of Hawaii. There are alot of large canyons and and big valleys. It also has the wettest spot on the planet! With that in mind I would definately pick some kind of wide angle lens. I wouldn't think that you would need a super fast lens either because of all of the sunlight. The 10-20mm sigma would be my pick escpecially with the 1.6x sensor. The 4-5.6 range shouldn't be a problem in Hawaii with all of the beautiful sunshine.

Zap228 - It's kind of funny that I found your thread because I was in the same predicament last night. My fiance and I are getting married February 18th and will be in Kona on the 19th. In the past couple of weeks I've really been looking at the Canon 10-22mm. All the reviews were great - nothing negative. I went ahead and bought that lens last night and can't wait to get it. I thought that it'd be a great lens for the beaches and landscapes in Hawaii. I'd strongly recommend the 10-22, if not the Canon, the Sigma received decent reviews as well. //www.thecamerabox.com/ had the best cost of $617.

617 for the sigmas is about 117 dollars too much lol.
Calumet has it for 499...
If you are looking for a walkaround lens, Let me suggest the 28-135mm IS USM. Its great for all purposes and it costs around 425 I think.
If you really want a landscape lens, id suggest the sigma 10-20.

Sorry for the confusion, that was for the Canon. Also, I have the 28-135 IS and yes it is a GREAT walkaround lens.

| If you haven't already, be sure to get a polarizer filter too. Besides enhancing the blue skies, it takes the glare off the water to really see the beautiful colors of the Hawaiian beaches. |

thanks everyone. I'm planning on getting a polarizer no matter what lens I get. I think I might go more with the wide angles. I guess I have a bunch of opinions on the sigma. Anyone have any experience with the Tokina?

| Get the Tokina 12-24. Based on reviews it's just as good as the Canon 10-22, just not as wide. Plus it cmaes with a hood and case. |

The Tokina is also a great lens, the sigma faired better in reviews, but ive used the Tokina as well, and the AF is very quick, the MF is very smooth, and one plus it does have is that its an even f/4 from 12-24. Id still reccomend the sigma however.

actually, unless its an L piece of glass, the quality is damn close it not the same as canons. Depending on the lens of course.

I like my 15-30 Sigma. The thing I don't like about it though is it's size & weight, although I don't know how it compares in this respect to the other lens you mentioned.
