I have a Nikon D70 and I want to get a quality wide-angle lens. The Nikkor 12-24mm DX lens seems very appealing to me but the only thing is that it won't work for cameras with full frame sensors. Now I know that even the Nikon D2X has a 1.5x focal length multiplier but it seems Canon's high-end dSLRs are full-frame. So will Nikon eventually follow suit or will it stay with the cropped sensors? I know this is probably an impossible question to answer right now but I was just wondering if anyone had any speculations because I plan to upgrade to a high-end dSLR one day and it would suck if I couldn't use my $1000 lens on it =(

The Big honcho at Nikon had stated publicly that Nikon has NO plans to go the Full Frame route any time soon...so unless you really really want a Full Frame DSLR, I wouldn't worry about it.

Any wide lens initially intended for Nikon film cameras would suit your needs, for example the 14mm 16mm 20mm 24mm 28mm until you hit the 35mm then you will be in nuetral mode. Not sure that Nikon will be releasing a full frame sensor in the NEAR future (I thought they would of done that with the D200 to be honest) but Im sure the D3X will be full frame and full cost as well. Im quite happy with the crop factor to be honest I like the extra zoom and find the Tokina 12-24mm is wide enough for my needs..

Hope this helped

yes no & only time will tell ..
one thing that the rumor mill (that dpreview is) suggests is a high end camera witha cropped sensor mode / bit like d2x except aps sized for DX lenses with a full size for other lenses .. but that is rumor .. & worth what you pay ...

or you can go with something like a sigma 15-30mm which is full frame 'kindof'
it works but higher distortion about the edges but 'ok' on film cameras

The Nikkor 12-24 AF-DX works quite well with full frame SLRs from 18-24mm. I've used it on my F100 many times.

I've been a Nikon user since the early 80's and I can assure you with almost absolute certainty Nikon will not go the full frame route. No, I don’t have any inside information; I just know how the company works. Just about all manufacturers based on 35mm designs besides Canon are content with the smaller sensors. The D2X produces near medium format quality from an APS sized sensor now, just imagine what another few years of technological advances will do.

Nikon will counter the advantages with great glass like the 12-24 DX. The other low light advantages of the larger sensor will be countered with technology. In a few years even the 4/3rds cameras such as Olympus will catch up with Canon’s low light advantage.
