OMG, got back from Christmas duties and my laptop wouldn't start! No operating system. I eventually found a recovery CD, and apparently there was no hard drive!
Okay, I'm very bad, I haven't backed up in a year.
Sheesh!
The other day, I was in a new age shop, and the woman who owned the shop said there was a particular stone that I should have. I'm not really into crystals although I am a Reiki practitioner, but I got the stone.
While I was sat there stressed out with my malfunctioning laptop, my wife said the crystal was 'crying out' to me, and I should put it on the laptop. I did, and it fired up into Windows straight away. This is pretty spooky, I'd spent quite a while unsuccessfully powering up the laptop repeatedly.
I should add that I do Reiki electronic equipment from time to time when it doesn't work... and it seems to do the trick a lot of the time.
For those of you that are wondering, it was an Amethyst crystal that rescued my hard drive today.
So I have 45Gb worth of data to back up, and a DVD drive that takes one hour to back up 4 Gb. I managed to spend 4 hours just now backing up about 16Gb, and I realised that they were all coasters because I changed the foldernames to be organised so I knew I'd backed them up. Unfortunately, I changed the names after I chose the files in Nero but before I actually burnt them. Doh!
It's now 6am and I have to drive 200 miles tomorrow lunchtime, and I've barely backed anything up. This is not good.
I guess I'm going to have to bring the laptop with me and pray it boots up a second time when I get there.
Wish me luck, and back up often!

Get a USB hard drive in a box - they sell the box that'll take a HD of your choise - i got the box for $15, and had an old HD laying about i put in there. Faster than a DVD burner and it can be unplugged and turned off and even taken to another location.

Not that i've done that...been a while since my last backup as well. I got a DVD burner for xmas..well, actually 2 weeks ago...still not backed anything up LOL.

I agree with the USB Box.. I just bought another one for $19, and a 200GB Hard drive for $39 (was $59 but had a $20 off coupon for the store) both at CompUSA.

So I have 400gb in my desktop and another 200GB in USB box to use on both Desktop and Laptop..

Backup is cheap. There is NO EXCUSE but laziness..

Thanks... I will get external backup as soon as I can, but I don't really trust another hard drive, I think we have bad electricity in this house because my drives seem to break down after less then a year. So not backing up was REALLY stupid.
I did remember this morning I have a 40Gb XDrive for my photos, so my wife is off at the shops to get a USB cable for it which I mislaid. That will do the trick in the short term (backing up 45Gb onto DVDs with a 2x burner in a panic-stricken rush before going on holiday and getting 4 hours of it completely wrong... ouch).
I'm very tired after being up till 6am, and I can't sleep because I'm too worried about my data. And I'm about to drive to Wales. Ah well, I'll be very careful. Have good holidays folks!
