I have a 2 foot cord attached to the flash. All new, the problem is the flash fires at any time, no rhyme nor reason. using the rebel xt with the 17-85 is lens. Works great on the camera. Bad cord or something I'm doing wrong???

I dont think the XT allows for cable flash - the flash can't talk to the camera unless it's in the hot shoe. Don't take my word for it but I believe I remember overhearing a conversation at Wolf on this topic.

what kind of cable?
Canon has a cable, runs $50 or so. I don't know of any other cable, unless you mean a PC cord type cable
