Any suggestions/tips on how much gear to bring for a one week stay in Northern New Zealand?
12/24/2005 12:21:28 PM · #2
Hard to answer that question without more specifics. Do you mean "photo gear"? I assume you do... What kind of a stay? Hiking, cycling, rent-a-car-and-travel, staying in one place, what?

Robt.

Yep I would agree with that, depends too on what time of year, seasons and weather changes very fast here
Give a call and I will help too if I can, I'm in Taupo, middle of Nth Island with plenty of places to see etc

Further to that, 1 week isnt much time, you could easily spend 2 to 3 weeks just in Taupo area andd still not see and do everything, the size of NZ when you look on a map is deceptive, people forget it is bigger than the entire United Kingdom, ( England Ireland Wales and Scotland ) and our coastline is strangely enough bigger than that of Nth America

Do not miss:
Taupo
Rotorua
and between the two, where you'll also find Wai-O-Tapu and Lady Knox Geyser
Wellington
Auckland
Near Otorohanga are some crystal caves that are beautiful
North of Auckland is great for sailing shots
Turangi is where Mount Doom from Lord of the Rings is - when I went there the weather was too bad to go into the mountain range

We spent a month in NZ a few years ago, planned on seeing the north island real fast, and zipping down southe to do some trecking.
We never got out of Auckland county, there is just too much to see! I would add Waitomo to Samchad's list of do not miss. we ended up spending a week there caving, waiting for the waters to go down enough so we could go black water rafting.

Only a week. What a shame. If your going to do the backpacker way of travelling, then there is no shortage to places to stay. My personal preferences for a weeks stay in New Zealands'North Island would be Bay of Islands, north of Auckland, Waitomo Caves just out of Otorohanga, that have the glow worms, Rotorua & Taupo for the touristy cultural & scenic views. All of which are within day trip range of Auckland albeit a long day. If your staying in Auckland then I would reccommend catching a cruise around the local Islands. There is even an extinct volcano, Rangitoto that you can climb to the top of & has the most incredible views.I would also have to reccommend you have good hiking footware for that climb. The old lava can be quit sharp. Good luck, I hope you have a great time.

I lived in the North of NZ for 4 years, and went back to visit last week. You're in for a great experience, in clean green NZ.
Some thoughts....watch out for the driving. The roads in Northland are small, tortuous, and mostly single lane, with lots of dangerous overtaking. If youre used to highways, its frustrating, getting trapped behind a line of traffic. Be wary of the roads, and budget more time for travelling than you would expect.

Go to Bay of Islands, and Waitangi golf course, for some lovely scenery, and great photo opportunities. Also a sense of history, in the birthplace of NZ. Take the ferry to Russel, and try to spend a night there. We had our honeymoon there. If you like diving, or even just snorkelling, take the 45 min boat trip to Poor Night's Island.......a stunning place, for its crystal clear water, sheer granite cliffs, and amazing aquatic life.
But just enjoy...youre in for a great time.

Dave,

If you are going in the next few months, you should find the climate to be very accommodating. My wife and I spend four weeks on the South Island a few years ago mostly bicycling.

This link will get you to a PDF file of a photo-travelogue which I wrote after we returned. New Zealand

Don't ding me too bad on the photos. Was using a Canon film camera (A1) and the negatives were rather crudely scanned. Even at that, the file is over 5Mbytes so be patient.

Were I going back today, I would take my 300D and a back-up point and shoot plus plenty of memory or a portable disk of some sort.
Enjoy

By gear, I did mean photo gear. My main question is whether to take my 80-400 along with my 18-200. Will I have use for the zoom of the 400 or will it mostly be wide angle stuff. As to only going for 1 week, you take what you can get. We were in Tokyo last year for only a week and had one of our best trips ever. Thanks for the "to do" lists, we'll be driving but would be just as happy staying close to Auckland if there is enough to keep us occupied. Thanks to all.

Take both lenses, you will get some fantastic wide angle shots but for some shots, the 400 will be a definite advantage
If you get to Taupo let me know, if the weather permits, I will get you up Mt Tauhara, just outside of town, awesome views ( in good weather ) over the lake, mountains and in all directions.
There is just so much to see and do its hard to know where to start.
If you like outdoor adventure, you have to do Black water rafting at the Waitomo Caves.....NZ is one of the few places worldwide where you can do this... I mean everyone has done whitewater rafting but how many can lay claim to Blackwater rafting......
Either way you should have a great time
If you are Taupo way and need to store fotos again give me a call you are welcome to use my computer to do that, has a dvd/cd burner so no problem

As a Kiwi I would reccommend if you are staying close to Auckland a couple of nice day trips might be the Coromandel and Northalnd ,2 large areas which have alot of interesting stuff to do and explore.

oops forgot to mention the Coromandel. Bring everything, you can never have too much glass for scenery like this.

Bring it all, you will be able to get some wonderful shots.

More than happy to assist in anyway I can if you need it, born and bred in Auckland so know it well.
