Hi guys! I was going to enter Shallow DOF with a macro shot but was also debating these photos of my nephew and nieces. I hardly saw any portrait shots in the challenge. What do you guys think? Shallow enough?

BTW, I love taking photos of my nephew and nieces. They are very photogenic and always love to pose in front of their uncle's camera.

Thanks everyone!

Rikki

Cute kids. I should have a few of those some day. ;)

Here's the key to shallow DOF... Are they isolated from the background. YES. I like the middle one the best. The colors, the smile, the cropping, the background (incl. the diagnol thing...)

I really like the third one....they are really cute kids..nice shots!

Great pics Rikki! The 3rd one's the winner IMO.

I'd say the third one is the winner.
As far as entering them in DOF, I think there is a very strong negative reaction by a minority of voters of cute kid shots unless they really nail the challenge, and while this is a good use of DOF control, it would have to be VERY narrow DOF to avoid the anty cute kid pix backlash.

Rikki those are wonderful shots. What beautiful kids and love the expressions. The first one looks like such a sweet little girl. I think the skintones on her need to be warmed up just a tad. The cheeks look good but the rest has a slight green cast on my monitor. I haven't calibrated in a couple of weeks so if no one else sees this, it's probably my monitor. Those would make wonderful Christmas gifts for the parents.
This is the best portrait work I have seen from you. You should be very proud of these.

Just relooked at the 3rd one and just had to edit to say. WOW! That is crystal clear and what a beautiful little girl. Go Rikki, Go Rikki, Go Rikki!!!! :)

Thanks Bren :) The third outtake is actually the image that I wanted to submit as my DOF entry. But silly me, I went out of town and forgot to bring these images with me :( I was hoping to shoot a macro shot but ran out of time.

Hi Alex. There was no special lighting involved in these shoots. No reflectors, flashes, etc. This was all done via natural daylighting. I'll try to shoot with reflectors sometime but for now, I just rely on good old mother nature :)

Now i'm bummed i didn't enter the DOF challenge :( Thanks for the comments guys. Any other comments would be great!

BTW, some folks don't like the "cute" kid photos for these technical challenges. Would this have suffered the consequences?

Thanks again.

Shallow DOF or Bokeh challenge?
Maybe this has been discussed, but whats the dif?
I look @ rikki's great pics and think Bokeh raher than shallow dof.
I think of shallow DOF is a pic like this...

Interesting thought. IMHO, these images are a combination of both. This is where it gets tricky because this is where the line could get a bit confused.

Anyone else?

I'm more inclined to go with Buzzrock's interpretation - I see Jacko's shot as more of a shallow DOF shot than your portraits (as an example one of the portraits was shot at f8) - but when it comes to the challenge I wouldn't worry - it seems peoples perceptions of shallow dof are pretty varied.

Ps - great portraits - particularly 2 and 3.

So does this mean it would be tough to get a Shallow DOF in portrait shots then? But I guess you're right about the voters' interpretations ;)

Merry Christmas!
