Hey guys...I have a Canon 20D, and I just bought a Sigma EF-500 DG ST ETTL II flash.

So I'm taking pictures, and even though the flash is firing (it's in ETTL mode), the pictures don't look any different with or without it....so I'm thinking it's a sync issue. The problem is, it happens no matter what mode I use...full auto, P, AV, etc.

So what am I missing?

Thanks in advance.

20d syncs at 1/250 i think, so make sure your shutter speed is slower than 1/250...though if u used a higher speed you still should be getting some light from the flash, and a black curtain...but im not sure. try just making your shutter less than 1/250

have you tried M? put it in M and try something drastic like F16 and 1/200. If it exposes that properly, or close to it, you know the flash is working.

Does the ST work with teh Canon 20D? Are you sure?
I looked at the Sigma flashes and i think you had to have the Super model to work with eTTL2 - the 2 being siginificant in your case as the 20D is teh 2 version, not the plain eTTL.

Next - if the room is bright you may not need the flash. AKA, daylight outside in auto mode...likely it won't fire.

When in doubt i put everything in auto mode and aim at a dark corner of the world and the flash should go off. that eliminates anthing i might have done.

In P mode the shutter speed is locked (at 1/60 unless you changed it to 1/200 in the Fn screen) so the flash should fire - just use the command dial to try for F22!

Do you see a flash ready icon in the viewfinder? If it's not there the camera does not see the flash.

IIRC, ETTL-2 does a pre-flash to set the metering. This may be the flash you're seeing.

The odvious things to check are:
1. is this the Canon version? There are several versions of that flash, and the canon one seems to be EF-500 DG ST (EO-ETTL II Canon)
2. are the batteries fully charged?
3. are the hotshoe and flash contacts clean, do they appear funtional (ie not bent or otherwise messed up), is the flash correctly mounted?

What happens when you take a picture in the dark using manual mode? When its dark, try setting the flash and camera to manual mode. Set the flash for full output, set the camera so the picture is two or three stops underexposed without flash. Take one shot with flash and one without. You should see a difference if the flash is working.

On the 20D you can disable ETTL by putting a small piece of tape over one contact on the hot shoe. If looking at the back of the camera, its the contact closest to you on the right.

Works great.
