Has anyone else hve problems with the flash on this camera. The flash just doesn't come up when I want it too. It is like it is stuck. I have ad it in the shop for almost a month and it is killing me!!! I was just wondering if anyone else had the same problem and how long it took to have it fixed?

I'm sorry, I'm a little confused. Are you referring to the S1 or the S2?

The S1 has an electronic flash release. This can usually only be triggered in P, Tv, Av and M modes. I think auto mode doesn't allow you to make any decisions about flash. I could be wrong on this. I only played with one for a short period of time.

The S2 has a manual flash pop-up. I flick mine up with my thumb without looking at it and sometimes have little precision with the maneuver, but I have never experienced difficulty there.

I got my first hands-on with that camera a week before it was officially available for sale, before the DPReview had posted it's hands-on, so the store manager and I had a rather amusing time trying to find the pop-up release.

The important detail here is that there is NO AUTOMATIC POP-UP FUNCTION in the S2 IS. It can only be raised by your thumb.

I personally like it that way and don't find it at all irritating.

I forgot to use it a few weeks ago when I took a group picture of some friends that had met in Taiwan that lived in different places in Canada and we all look almost the same that got ruined because of really badly hued multiple light sources, but the point of having the flash like this is that it makes you think more about your lighting.

Being conscious of your lighting is more valuable than having an automatic pop-up flash in my books.

PS. If you have had it in the shop for a month, you might want to consider never going back to that shop. That's ridiculous. It is in the manual for that camera and it took 3 of us all of 5 minutes to figure it out when we were mucking about with it at the Canon dealership. It was the first time any of us had even looked at it. They called the owner and asked if it was ok to unwrap it a little early.

The S1 is the one that I was referring too. I hated not being able to open it when I needed it.
It was under warranty and they took over 30 days to fix it so we got an automatic upgradeto the S2. I love the manual flip flash.

Cool. Nice stuff. Gotta love when a warranty really comes through for ya! I chose to buy one of the smaller cams over the S1 IS because of the price and pocketability and the fact that it really didn't have the features I wanted.

On the other hand, the S2 was a no-brainer for me because it had pretty much all the things I was looking for in a small digicam.

A big jump ahead IMHO.

Have fun with it!
