I own a Nikon D70.
My problem is that my pictures never look good coming directly out of the camera. I always have to add light with my editing software. I have the camera set to jpeg normal and large. I just purchased a SB-600 flash, and I still have to fix my pics.
Am I doing something wrong? Do I have a setting off? I really want to take more pics, but this problem has got me down. Any suggestions out there?

Add light? Do you mean brighten? I don't think that's abnormal, esp. if you're using all auto.

I would suggest bracket your shots.

What settings are you using? Do you have the EV compentations set to a _# ? Post one up with the EXIF info on it and let us take a look.

post a few pics so people can see what you mean. There are several free places to do this on the web.
you can then link to them so Nikon owners can help you out.

E-mail me the photo and I'll put it in my portfolio and post it for you if you don't have another web spot for posting. My e-mail is on my profile page.

As others previously suggested, getting a photo up somewhere so we can review it is the next step.

I just wanted to add that it is also important to make sure that your monitor is correctly calibrated. I found this monitor calibration page helpful, and it requires no extra software or hardware: //pages.prodigy.net/ecmorris/tips/monitor.htm

Most pictures from dSLR need a touch of manipulation after taking the shot. P/S, prosumers, etc usually come out good enough so you don't need processing as most people notice after upgrading.

Mine can be the same way, also having to up the exposer compensation by + 0.5 or more when converting from NEF in Photoshop. The best thing you can do is START with the in camera metering system and then check the picture on the histogram screen. Make sure the curve does not extend past the end points and make any changes to bring it back in if needed. Also use the highlights screen to check for blown highlights. Might save you some time back at the PC.
