I’m quite offended by the number of unpleasant comments received on this submission regarding my use of “gratuitous” nudity and the number of low votes (1-4) it received. I'm irrate about the junk votes on the low end. Thirty-four votes of one is unacceptible for an image of this quality.

The use of nudity was no more gratuitous than Sandro Botticelli’s Birth of Venus or the art deco paintings of Tamara De Lempicka and stayed within the realm of fine art. While the photo is inspired by classic pin-up, it was by no means pornographic.

I researched before I put something out. Googling “Industrial Nude” and browsing art books, I saw some really good photos. Then, I took my own path, choosing not to put a nude girl in front of an industrial landscape (in the vein of what I had seen masters do many times before), but to make her active in an industrial situation.

What many failed to see is a contrast between the harsh industrial environment and the soft skin of the model -- a divergence between flesh and steel. That objective was unachievable in attire. Now, tell me how was the nakedness unjustified?

ALSO…

I caught a lot of flack about safety goggles. It was the model’s choice to lose the goggles, not mine. I must admit I didn’t like the shots with goggles, but initially used them for her safety. In the end, they were not used and nobody’s eye was put out. I also kept her covered in water to prevent any burns. For God’s sake man, this isn’t a real industrial scene, it’s art with an “industrial feeling” (to quote challenge specs).

OK, I’m done ranting now, so I’d like to thank the rest of you who left appreciative and/or constructive comments. Many of you are people whose work I admire and I see your appreciation of something that is art. Your comments made my photo a winner.

I hear ya, but you have to remember, there are 47000+ members in DPChallenge, the majority of them are by no mean anywhere close from being able to objectively rate a photo, aside there are just many people who are offended by nudity regardless of the art it represent.

Your photo is indeed a work of art, I rated it at 9 only because the contrast was not to my liking. If I were you, I would just ignore the low votes and nasty comments, I know it's frustrating, but just throw it behind you ..

Personal I gave you a 9, this was an exceptional piece. The contrast was excellent you should have placed higher.

I looked at the comments and I found them to be overwhelmingly slanted to the positive. Some of the naysayers said, frankly, that this wasn't their cup of tea, and you gotta respect that. Only a couple comments were negative in the sense of slamming gratuitous nudity. Fewer than I thought there would be for sure. Lot of low votes, yeah, but you had to know going in that this was coming right?

Fine shot, strange and luminous!

Ya, you got the bumrush. After reading the comments, I think I would have liked to see a shot not with goggles but with a welder's blastmask. That might have added an interesting commentary.

You know I gave this a 9 already. The warm tone and exposure were exceptional.

I agree it's a great idea, setup, & shot. My main nit with it (gave you a 7, FWIW), is that the shine of the oil on her skin made her look like a mannequin to me. Otherwise, I would have given it higher marks.

No its not art, In fact I doubt its anyways industrial, I'm supprised my comment to you is missing. Shes grinding on a backing plate of a rear brake, off a chevy maybe, with the brake shoe hanging off. To be honest several things REALLY ticks me off about this photo:

1st she is grinding naked? no safty glasses naked body? HUH? hows that industrial?

2nd Industrial means making something, not grinding a backing plate off a c-1500 pickup, with the brake shoe hanging off.

Not trying to be mean but thats my thoughts. Im really surprised my comment didn't get sent to you. Its not art its push naked look at this, doesn't meat the challange. Sorry being honest...

I recognized it as a pin up and personally I think it fits the challenge very well. It has a very surreal quality to it that made it seem very aged to me. I'd hardly call it porn. IMO the safety of the scene shouldn't be counted in the voting - that's between the photographer and the model. There are plenty of other very "risky" shots I've seen on this site not to mention many much more "gratuitous" shots.

At the same time there are no rules on how to vote so the scores are what they are. Much of the best art in the world is love it or leave it. The way I see it you made people feel something so it's a success regardless of the scores.

Got an 8 from me... As soon as I saw it I thought hmmm... bet this gets hammered. Becomes almost obvious as to what will succeed and what will fail when a little out of the norm. Not to worry, your entry was appreciated by many and thanks for adding something unique to the challenge... :)

I am not usually somebody that says one thing or another about how someone else votes however...

Anybody who voted less than a 5 on this photo should not be allowed to vote any longer at this site. If photos like this are rated "below average" I just don't see the incentive to even participate here for people trying to do anything of extra-ordinary work.

A great photo...congratulations :-D

I thought the image was excellent and gave it a 9. You do realise that true artistic images are usually not going to score high here.

Don't let the comments and score effect the direction you want to take your photography, this site is quite mainstream.

As the saying goes, art is in the eye of the beholder.
The vote distribution is as spread out as any I've seen on DPC so you struck a lot of nerves with this image.
I didn't vote on this challenge, but I would have given this a 6. I like the composition and the interesting POV, but I didn't like the (as someone else said) plastic feel to the model. Personally, I would have rated this higher if the model was dressed in industrial clothing with glamour makeup (like Rosie the Riviter from WWII posters).
I wouldn't slam the voters for where you placed though - obviously you have more attachement to the image than they do. As for what someone else said about the voters being negative toward nudes, I think browsing through other challenges will disprove that theory.

edit for spelling

For what it's worth, I thought it was a good entry to the challenge. Sort of like the pictures you see on the office walls when you go to some garages to get your car fixed. I didn't much like the shiny skin, looked a bit strange to me, and I can't say it was my favourite picture of the challenge, but it was a good entry.

"61 out of 222"

Dude, you have nothing to complain about. That's a great showing. Maybe a little underrated, yes, but great nonetheless.

I saw something like that in Riverton, Wyoming a couple years back, at a body shop :)

Thanks everyone ... you are definitely helping with my anger management. What really makes me mad is that it scored lower than my previous picture of an ashtray (that's just sick).

It's an '87 Toyota Corrola :-) And some people do consider pin-up a valid art form.

I think its a great shot...if you would take a look around and see what garages actually put on their wallss...it's photos like that, if they can find ones that creative. And it's only because they are guys...even being a girl...if i had my own garage, work or home, i would hang that pic up!!!!

Dunno as an auto shop owner, that stuff has no way to be seen by my customers. Aside from DPC that in a business should never posted by a business. The Cavets are far to many...

Ya know, 61 out of 220 ain't that bad, and there seemed to be far more people who did like the image as opposed to not. It probably should have scored better, but just remember your audience.

Its a bad stereo type, And I just know somehow a garage or repair facility would get claimed to it. Kinda Sad in a way, some people think this is a degrade to women, some think of it as art. personally I wouldn't have it in front of my customers in case they took offense..

BTW Fotomann No such thing as a corrola its a Corolla

The point isn't the Political Correctness of hanging it in a car shop, but that images like this are part of the history of pin-up and Americana.
